Separatists rake up unmarked graves issue | | | Kashmiri separatists seem to be eagle eyed while trying to find out an issue or issues they could rake up for the purpose of destabilising peace in the state. The latest issue is unmarked graves in which 2000 people are said to have been buried since 1989,when the Pakistan sponsored militancy took roots in Jammu and Kashmir. There is no doubt that the matter related to the unmarked graves is quite unfortunate and calls for a proper probe to find out who were inside the graves and the committee,If set up for holding investigations,be asked to find out why, who, when and where of the entire issue. If the figures dished out by the State Human Rights Commission and the separatists are correct one wishes to know as to why for all these years the separatists have remained silent on the matter. One wishes to know as to why the separatists have chosen the current summer season for airing their anger against the presence of unmarked graves. It has usually been experienced that Kashmir is set on fire even over one case of excesses by the security forces or over a single case of custodial killing. The public protest over human rights violations have been witnessed since 1990.If it has been the case why did not the people react when the number of unmarked graves started increasing ?Chief Minister,Omar Abdullah, has announced that the issue of unmarked graves called for Truth and Reconciliation Commission. And Syed Ali Shah Geelani was the first to reject Omar's offer on the plea that enquiry by those who masterminded the killings could not be impartial.Possibly Geelani wanted he matter to be probed by a high level judicial team comprising people from judiciary known for their honesty and integrity. For the time being the state Government has decided to peruse thoroughly the report of the State Human Rights Commission. The Commission in its report has stated that there were more than 2,000 unmarked graves in the districts of Kupwara,Baramulla and Bandipora.Out of these 2000 people buried 574 people were locals. This figure gives a lie to report that all those buried were claimed by the security forces as unidentified militants. If one reads the SHRC report one may not hesitate saying that in these unmarked graves over 1450 people who were buried were nonlocals. And since 1989 nonlocals meaning foreign mercenaries because since then Pakistan had pushed into Jammu and Kashmir guntoting youths from Afghanistan ,Pakistan,Sudan,Libya,Chechnya and other muslim countries. If about 1500 nonlocals are buried in the unmarked graves it indicates that these graves do not hold bodies of innocent people as separatists try to claim. The districts of Kupwara,Baramulla and Bandipore have remained militancy infested belts between 1989 and 1996.Majority of infiltrators, among whom were included large groups of foreign mercenaries, camped in Kupwara,Bandipore and Baramulla forest belts. It was but natural if the areas witnessed encounters between the security forces and the militants resulting in killing of a large number of infiltrators. At present voices condemning unmarked graves have begun multiplying when such condemnation has not been there when over 47,000 civilians were killed in the militancy related violence between 1989 and 2009.If unbiased observers smack mischief in the campaign against unmarked graves they are justified.
