Rule of law can't be subverted to please Kashmiri leadership | Hanging of Afzal Guru | | Neha JAMMU, Aug 25: Kashmiri leaders, including Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Tahrik-e-Huriyat chief Syed Ali Shah Geelani, would want New Delhi not to hang Afzal Guru convicted in the December 13, 2001 Parliament attack case. Geelani was the first to oppose the Union Home Ministry's decision to reject clemency petition of Guru and warn the Union Government that the hanging of Guru would create an uncontrollable situation in the Valley. His diktat was that New Delhi must allow Guru to walk free to avert the impending disaster in Kashmir. The Chief Minister followed in the footsteps of Geelani a couple of days later. He did not use the language Geelani had used to frighten New Delhi. However, the meaning and implications of what he suggested were the same. He had, inter-allia, said: "New Delhi should look into the wider issue and my main concern is the law and order situation in the Valley." What Geelani and Abdullah said clearly suggested that they were on the same page and that both of them wanted New Delhi to subvert the rule of law by accepting the clemency petition of Guru. The clemency petition is reportedly with the President of India who could give her verdict anytime from now. Since the Union Home Ministry has rejected the clemency petition of Guru under pressure from the opposition, particularly the BJP, it can be said without any hesitation that the President of India would endorse the stand of the Union Home Ministry and she should considering the nature of crime Guru, along with other terrorists, committed to further their pernicious break-India and destroy-Parliament game plan - game plan that did take away several precious lives of our dedicated and chivalrous security officers. Guru did not commit an ordinary crime. He committed a heinous crime. He, along with others, not only sought to blow into pieces the Parliament but also sought to liquidate the law-makers, including the Prime Minister. They failed because our alert security forces defeated their game plan. The Indian Parliament and our law-makers were saved because of the splendid role our security forces played. Had Guru and his associates succeeded, there would have been extreme form of chaos and political instability in the country. Guru & Co not only sought to blow into pieces our Parliament and liquidate the law-makers but they also sought to break India into smithereens. How could you overlook the crime Guru committed and allow him to walk free? The Sessions Court, the High Court and the highest court of the country, Supreme Court, have all convicted Guru after a very thorough scrutiny and examination and listening to the witnesses. You cannot ignore the unambiguous judicial verdict. To ignore the judicial verdict and grant clemency to Guru would not only mean subversion of the rule of law but it would also mean promotion of the cult of terror and license to kill and break India. One can understand the Geelani's stand on India and Guru, but one simply fails to understand why Omar Abdullah should tread the path charted by Geelani. He is Chief Minister and it is his fundamental duty to uphold the rule of law at whatever cost. The fact that he has decided to act otherwise is a reflection on the custodians of the Indian State. This is not the way to run the affairs of the country and defend and promote further its sovereignty and territorial integrity. There is still time for the authorities in New Delhi to refashion their whole approach towards those who suggest subversion of rule of law under one pretext or the other. Guru has committed a heinous crime and the law of the land must take its own course. The sooner it happens the better for the nation, which is in no mood to forgive Guru and others of his ilk. |
