Govt succumbs, release of prisoners begins | Geelani's close aides set free | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Aug 25: Taking no chances, the government yesterday ordered release of Hurriyat (G) leaders Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai and Ghulam Nabi Sumji. Ten others were released as well. The release has come a few days after Syed Ali Geelani threatened `peaceful' agitation after Eid in case the political prisoners were not released. Geelani's threat was taken very seriously by the government. It evoked a response from the former Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah. Addressing Geelani he said: " Geelani Sahib strikes and agitation will burn 'destroy Kashmir". The state government set the process of releasing political prisoners rolling yesterday when the Review Committee headed by Principal Secretary Home Department, BR Sharma recommended release of 12 detainees including Geelani's close aides Sehrai and Sumji. The Committee has also recommended release of South Kashmir Mirwaiz Qazi Yasar. Qazi was taken into custody for openly supporting stone pelting last year. Hinting at release of more prisoners in near future, Sharma told newsmen that review of PSA cases was a continuous process. Sharma said the authorities had released 45 prisoners on the recommendations of the Review Committee since October 2010. Yesterday's meeting of the Review Committee follow the meeting of the Unified headquarters held Tuesday with Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah in chair. The meeting besides general security scenario discussed the proposed protest programme of Geelani. The authorities in order to ensure a peaceful summer took into custody around 1000 youth mainly from the old city. The nocturnal raids continue and so does arrest of youth. A delegation seeking release of the youth accused the police of torturing the youth after arrest. The authorities have also taken into custody prominent persons like Aasiya Andrabi, Shakeel Bakshi, Mushtaq-ul-Islam to foil protests. Bakshi's PSA was quashed by the High Court. However, he has been booked in an `old case'. Meanwhile, Geelani issued a clarification. "The protests will be peaceful. We are not going to launch an attack to break open the prisons", he said. |
