Will SAC be able to catch 'big fish'.......? | CM's list in making, over 200 cases pending | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Aug 25: Even as with two newly appointed judges assuming offices, the State Accountability Commission has become functional, scepticism rides high across J&K among common people on whether it would be able to serve the purpose of checking rampant corruption , hundreds of cases of which have gathered dust in the dumped files of the Commission for the last two over years. At a time when the entire country is up in arms against the menace of corruption, SAC is faced with the burgeoning task of reopening the cases and looking into them afresh dozens of which are against former ministers, present ministers, high ranking officers in the present administration who continue to enjoy plum and prize postings. According to sources there are around 245 complaints against former and present ministers, MLAs and ex MLAs of various political parties of pending before the Commission. The complaints apparently pertain to the corruption, misuse of power, misappropriation of funds, bunglings and illegal appointments. Cases are also pending against 30 IAS officers, 20 IPS officers, 10 IFS officers, 3 former Vice-Chancellors of Universities, some high level officers of J&K Bank, 4 former Chief Engineers and even some high ranking police officers, sources added. The cases are filed with both the offices of SAC in capital cities of Srinagar and Jammu. The Commission being functional with Durbar Move system, it has started its functioning from Srinagar, since offices are in summer capital upto October. The scepticism and apprehensions are galore on account of the existing scenario of corruption and brazen corrupt practices indulged in by one and all openly in offices with no check from any quarter. Sources also said the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is well aware of the fact as to which ministry and minister is indulging in such practices but no step has been taken that could have served as at least detterence . Besides the name of at least three Commissioner \Secretaries also figures high in the list of the corrupt officers about which Omar talked recently that it was being prepared afresh, sources said adding that he has even been provided substantial evidence by the anti corruption body which is awaiting a nod from the CM for starting proceedings but there is no response , leave aside approval from the government to charge sheet these officers. In such a scenario, the moot question remains, after remaining defucnt for over two years, how SAC and the people at its helm will be able to act or even announce its recommendations against the 'big fish' who have always managed escape routes easily through political channels. |
