Let politicians, public representatives contribute in generating awareness about AIDS: Mangat

Politicians and elected representatives at the gross root level can play important role to motivate and convince the people in general to adopt preventive measures to curb dreaded diseases like AIDS, said the Minister for Health and Medical Education Mr. Mangat Ram Sharma while addressing corporators of Jammu Municipal Corporation at a function organized to involve elected representatives in the AIDS preventive campaign. The function was organized by the J&K State AIDS Prevention and Control Society in collaboration with Municipal Corporation of Jammu.
Members Legislative Council S. Ravinder Singh Mikki, Mayor J.M.C Mr. Manmohan Singh, Deputy Mayor Mr. Dharmbeer Singh, Municipal Corporation Commissioner Mr. Vinod Sharma, Project Director AIDS control society MR. M.A Wani, Consultants Blood Bank Professor G.R Raina, large number of Corporators and Doctors participated in the function.
Mr. Sharma said that elected representatives should be role model for the public so that their every word receives appreciation by people in general. He said Corporators must take the message of adopting preventive measures not for only HIV/AIDS but other social evils to their respective wards and conduct group discussions, seminars and deliberate with people of all walks of life. He said real method to curb AIDS is to follow the principles of their religion and live a sacred life which only can save us from the worldly evils and dreaded diseases.
Project Director Mr. M.A Wani said that elected representatives who are directly connected with the people at the gross root level are the best source for change of attitude of the masses. He said solution to get rid of dreaded disease is to abstain from physical relation with opposite sex before marriage, faithful to their spouse and committed for adopting preventive measures. He said first case of AIDS was reporter in USA in 1981 and just within a span of two decades it spread all over the world and presently 42 million people have been found HIV+ and 95 percent infected are in developing countries. He said besides adopting preventive measures society is also facing a stigma of misconception and remours about the HIV+ which are causing great damage to the society.
Consultant Blood Bank Professor G.R Raina advocated safe blood transfusion and voluntary blood donation. He said blood donation is the main source of HIV infections rather than physical relations. He said teaching of our saints, Gurus and Prophets are more prevalent in the modern time and we should follow those. He said Yoga and long breathing in fresh air can helps protect our body from many dreaded diseases including HIV/AIDS.
Earlier Mayor J.M.C read out welcome address and said that this session has been conducted for the awareness of the corporators so that they can take this message to their wards to convince and motivate people to help in curbing the dreaded diseases of AIDS.
