Kashmiri civil Defence volunteer saves building from fire

SRINAGAR, Aug 26: Mohammed Illiyas (No: 3305/S) a recently enlisted volunteer of civil Defence saved Government Medical College Hostel Building Bemina from catching fire
The incident occurred when Dr. Altaf residing in ground floor quarter of Govt Medical College, Hostel at Bemina was arranging niyaz for Iftaar that all of a sudden the pipe connecting the LPG cylinder to the gas stove caught fire. Dr. Altaf immediately raised an alarm and evacuated his children.
Seeing smoke coming out of the quarter someone called the Fire Services, Police Control Room & Civil Defence Control Room. Ct. Mohammed Illiyas who recently enlisted himself as a civil defense volunteer, was on his way home after completing his duty in connection with Juma-tul-Vida, when he got a call from Reginald Civil Defense Control Room and he rushed to Bemina and saw the commotion and LPG cylinder on fire.
There was a fire extinguisher around, but no one knew how to use it and no one dared to go near the burning LPG cylinder. Without caring for his life, Mohammed Illiyas took the fire extinguisher and broke the window of the quarter and rushed inside and extinguished fire of the LPG cylinder.
In the meantime, two fire tenders also reached the spot along with SHO Parimpora, Ghulam Mohiddin and DO Bemina, Mansoor Ahmed. The fire was brought under control, though the room was charred. The Bedding, clothes, ATM, books and ATM of the doctor got burnt, but other quarters were saved.
The doctors residing in the hostel appreciated the timely action of Mohammed Illiyas in putting out the fire, without caring for his safety. SHO Parimpora has recommended a reward in favour of Mohammed Illiyas who extinguished fire and saved the entire building from catching fire. Addl. Director General of Police, Civil Defence, Home Guards & Auxiliary Police, Dr. Ram Lubayya appreciated the action of the civil defence volunteer and announced a cash reward in his favour.
