| Historic Shankri Devta mela gets underway | | | Early Times Report
UDHAMPUR, Aug 26: Three day historic Shankri Devta mela got underway in village Meer of block Panchari in district Udhampur, today where thousands of people attired in traditional and colorful dresses thronged the mela site to offer prayers and got blessings of their revered deity for over all peace and prosperity.
Tehsildar Settelment (Mela Officer), Udhampur, Susheel Kesar inaugurated the historic mela in the Shankri Devta temple premises amidst beating of drums and full festivity. Officers of different departments, members of mela committee and large number of people were present on the occasion.
It may be recalled that Shankri Devta temple is situated on a hillock in village Meer of block Panchari in a scenic spot which is surrounded by meadows, lofty mountains and lush green forests. Village Meer and Block Headquarter, Panchari are linked with pucca road from Udhampur town.
Youth Services and Sports Department, Udhampur organized rural sports competitions including Kabbadi, Tug of war, weightlifting events for entertainment of people and also to expose talent of students in culture and games. District administration has made adequate arrangements of drinking water facility, Medicare, electricity and sanitation.
To educate the people about various state and centrally sponsored government schemes, different departments have put up their stalls at the site of mela. Local traders had also constructed their makeshift stalls of Jalebi, Pakora, bangles and toys etc. at the spot.
J&K Indian Style Wrestling Association in collaboration with Local Dangal Committee also organized wrestling competitions during the first day of the mela in which famous wrestlers of different areas participated.
