Sarfu murdered at JIC, post-mortem report confirms | | | Sumit Sharma JAMMU, Aug 26: In what could be described as sensational, the alleged suicide committed by Sarfu, a notorious trans-border smuggler, who, police claimed ended his life in the lock-up of the Joint Interrogation Centre (JIC) at Miran Sahib on August 17 last, has turned out to be a case of murder. Sarfu Ram, 48, was found hanging in a compound inside lock-up of the JIC during wee hours of August 17 and it was alleged that he committed suicide. However, the post-mortem report of Sarfu revealed that his stomach and intestines got ruptured which caused profuse bleeding resulting- Peritonitis (basically a blood infection that causes person to go into shock which quickly lead to death). The rupture was caused due to fatal blow at his stomach, postmortem report said. The report which was prepared by a board of three doctors namely Dr Rahul Gupta, Surgery, Dr Rupali Balgotra, Pathology, and Dr Rajinder Thapa, Medicine, confirmed the exact cause of death. The viscera of Sarfu was taken by doctors during post-mortem conducted in Government Medical College and Hospital (GMC&H) mortuary in presence of a Chief Prosecuting Officer and a District Police Officer, sources said. Sources said that the post-mortem report is to be handed over to the District Development Commissioner (DDC) Jammu Sanjeev Verma who ordered magisterial probe into the circumstances leading to the death of Sarfu. DDC Jammu when contacted admitted of receiving of post-mortem report. The post-mortem report also suggested how lower rung police officers were made scape goats to save the skin of seniors and to hide the truth as well. However, sources afraid of manipulation by the police, to save some colleagues, as Sarfu had alleged the involvement of a few police officers in trans-border smuggling network. Sarfu also indicated that he is being used as a tool by some police officers for smuggling, they added Sarfu Ram, a resident of Camp Khour, who had been arrested few days back along with another trans-border smuggler, Shinda, had spilled beans about narco- terrorism-cum-hawala network being sponsored from Pakistan and spread from Jammu to New Delhi during his questioning, initially by police and later at the JIC. Earlier, an official of JIC in his statement said that Sarfu Ram was found hanging in a compound inside lock-up of the JIC in the early hours on August 17. He had used his pent to tie it with iron rods to hang himself. The officer said Sarfu Ram was breathing when the JIC staff brought him down when they observed him hanging. He was rushed to the Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu, where he was declared as dead. The custodial death was immediately reported to the Deputy Commissioner, Jammu, who ordered a magisterial inquiry into it and adding two CID officials Head Constable, Kuldeep Singh, the Guard Commander at the JIC and Qadir Hussain, Sentry on duty were placed under suspension. Following the incident a case in the death was registered at Miran Sahib police station under Section 174 CrPC. Worthwhile to mention here that on July 25, Special Operation Group (SOG) arrested two persons including a street vendor for allegedly bringing fake currency of face value over Rs 1.10 lakh to border area of Miran Sahib. However, the same currency was turned out to be original and a case of hawala racket was surfaced. Informed sources said, Parshotam Lal, a street vendor, was arrested from Kheer Pind, Miran Sahib, based on information divulged by one of his associates, Sanju, whom police arrested from village Khod in the early hours of July 25. Later police arrested the father of Sanju identified as Sarfu. Sources said that earlier police got information that father-son duo was involved in the business of circulating counterfeit currency in Jammu district and based on the inputs a raid was conducted at the residence of Sanju where he was arrested. During interrogation Sanju told police that he and his father had hidden the consignment in the residence of his cousin at Miran Sahib and accordingly a raid was conducted to arrest his cousin brother Parshottam. From the residence of Parshotam police recovered an amount of Rs 1.10 lakh in a bag that was concealed beneath a bed. A case in this connection was registered with Miran Sahib police and during raids on the divulge of the Sarfu police recovered a whooping sum of Rs 4.85 lakh from the residences of the relatives of Sarfu. The detailed questioning was in progress in JIC where he was found dead. |
