Early Times Report
JAMMU, Aug 26: The decision of State Road Transport Corporation (SRTC) management decision to engage new staff after according approval to volunteer retirement of hundreds of its employees has drawn flak as employees and workers bodies' are up in arms against the organization.
The organization which according to sources has appointed 200 new drivers after 250 serving drivers opted for voluntary retirement from the organization for its failure to pay salaries and other dues to them in time. Seeing no option in sight after the SRTC workers and employees were not paid perks for months together they opted for voluntary retirement from the service after prolonged agitation and protests by the workers also failed to yield results, sources added.
Sources said on the one hand over 700 employees who opted for voluntary retirement from the Corporation since 2008 till date, the authorities and the management has appointed 200 new drivers on the basis of favoritism. All these drivers were either in close proximity with ruling coalition politicians or the authorities of the management, sources added.
Ignoring all standing rules and regulations the management was supposed to call back for re-engagement all those drivers who had retired on voluntary basis during these years, sources said, adding such a decision has generated a lot of resentment among the retired employees of the Corporation as well as serving lot and they are up in arms against the management.
``The authorities were supposed to re-engage the voluntary retired employees but they ignored us'' said Dev Raj Bali president All J&K Volunteer Retirement Employees Association. He while, turning tables on SRTC management said the 35 employees who retired on June 17 this year on voluntary basis were not given dues till date. ``Though we were relieved on June 17 but the authorities have shown our date of retirement as March 31, 2010''he added.
He said the Finance Department has released the funds for payment of dues to SRTC retired employees but same has not been disbursed till date. He wanted to know where this money had gone and why not the gratuity, salary and exgratia in favour of retired employees was not released till date. He said out of 670 employees who retired since 2008 till date the only 50 percent dues were released in their favour while 50 percent is still balance.
``We had thought to start our own business after seeking VRS from Corporation which was unable to pay dues to us for months together but this did not happen as the authorities played a fraud with us'', said an agitated Bali who warned that the VRS taken employees will come to streets in case the authorities fail to settle their issue.
He said this way the authorities were adopting tactics to harass the employees who have taken VRS from the Corporation. Earlier our families faced starvation after the organization failed to pay the salaries to employees for months together and now they have further withheld our dues for two months, he added.
