Early Times Report
JAMMU, Aug 26: A West Bengal resident and two others were late Thursday night apprehended by police at Domail in Jhajjar Kotli, about 30 km from here on Jammu-Srinagar road, along with Rs 5 lakh fake Indian Currency notes.
A Scorpio cab (JK09/6302), which was hired by them from Jammu for Srinagar and which was tagged with J&K government placard, was also seized, according to police sources.
By pumping fake currency into the troubled state, the anti-national elements wanted to destroy its financial fabric, besides funding terror networks, the sources added.
Intelligence agencies had tipped off police that a consignment of fake IC notes would be smuggled to Srinagar Thursday night. Acting on this vital input, police laid nakas at Domail and several other places on the highway last night.
At the Domail checking point which was manned by DSP Faisal Qureshi and Jhajjar Kotli police station SHO, Inspector Yashpal Jamwal, the cops intercepted the scorpio cab at about 11.45 pm Thursday and asked its three occupants to get down for frisking.
The checking of their belongings led police to the recovery of 5 lakh fake IC notes and Rs 37,000 genuine notes. The fake notes were in the denomination of Rs 1,000 (300 Nos) and Rs 500 (400 Nos), the sources added.
The three persons were immediately arrested and whisked away to Jhajjar Kotli police station. The scorpio and the consignment were also seized. Its driver Mushtaq of Srinagar was also detained but was set free later as his involvement did not figure in the fake currency smuggling racket, sources said.
The accused included Mohammad Habibudin, son of Hamimoo of Bhagalpur in West Bengal, Ghulam Mohammad Sofi, son of Abdul Rehman, and Abdul Rashid War, son of Sanaullah, both residents of Suipora, Kupwara.
The consignment had been smuggled into West Bengal from Bangladesh. Habibudin brought these counterfeit notes to Jammu for their further supply to Kashmir.
Sources said Habibudin, who came here by bus two days back, was received at the General Bus Stand by Sofi and Rashid. He later checked in a hotel near the bus stand.
For two days, they held deliberations in the hotel room but the deal was not struck as there was disagreement between the two sides over the rate of the fake IC notes.
The threesome yesterday decided to travel to Srinagar and finalise the deal there but they landed in police dragnet at Domail.
DSP Qureshi said Habibudin had smuggled fake IC notes into the state earlier also. This was perhaps his third trip, he added, saying other details would be known after his interrogation was over.
About Sofi and Rashid, sources said they allegedly used to buy fake currency notes at cheaper rates and then mix them up with genuine notes.
The sustained interrogation of the accused was in progress. Police hoped to make more arrests in the case.
A case under relevant sections of law was registered against them at Jhajjar Kotli police station.
