Stress related disorders among troops on decline in Jammu Kashmir | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Aug 27: (KIP):-The level of suicidal bids in the troops, deployed in Jammu and Kashmir, has been on the decline since the last year. Official sources said that till 2009 one to two suicidal attempts per week by soldiers in Jammu and Kashmir used to be reported. After reviewing the situation senior Army functionaries and senior doctors in various military hospitals had come to the conclusion that suicidal tendencies were the result of stress among soldiers posted in difficult terrains. In order to reduce the level of stress among the troops various measures have been taken in hand. One such measure included regular medical examination of soldiers to find out the level of stress related disorders. Prior to 2009 these stress related disorders were on the rise which resulted in series of suicide bids besides armed attack on either the colleagues or their officers. Whosoever, during the medical examination, was found to be suffering from even traces of stress related disorders were being given long treatment, in certain cases they are admitted in the hospitals for two to three weeks. Sources said that those having signs of stress related disorders were given counseling in order to find the root cause of the stress. They said if the place of posting was the cause for stress they were being posted to less difficult areas. In addition to this Yoga classes have been introduced where the soldiers are taught various exercises that result in diluting or reducing the level of stress. Sources said that officers right from the ranks of captain to Lt. Generals have been advised against being rough and rude towards heir junior officers. They have been also advised to adopt totally a humane and human approach towards soldiers. Also, troops have been provided with various sports facilities so that whenever they are off the duty they could spend time while playing different games. In some difficult and hilly areas provision has been made for indoor games since the scope for outdoors games like cricket, hockey, volleyball and basket ball was very limited.
