Women’s equality day celebrated at MIER

JAMMU, Aug 27: To mark women’s equality day, Shanti Gupta Centre for Women Studies of MIER College of Education organised a role play session by the students.

The programme was an endeavor to bring about gender sensitization and awareness amongst youth about the rights and responsibilities of women. Programme was presided over by Dr. Renu Gupta, Director CWS, MIER. The other academic personalities gracing the occasion were Dr. Surinder Kaur, Coordinator CWS and Controller of Examination, MIER, Dr. Annie Koul, HOD, B.Ed, Rajinder Parveen, HOD, B. Ed (Spl.) and Dr. B. L. Raina, HOD, M. Ed.

The students of B Ed (Gen & Special) and M. Ed participated in the programme by effectively bringing out the real situation women are in through role plays on three different themes namely: treatment meted to women at work place; at public places and at home. The students, through their acts highlighted the psycho-social factors women under go during adverse situations at home, workplace and public places.

The entire creation of role plays gave a first hand knowledge to the audience about the importance of support structure for women to come. At the beginning of the programme, Dr. Renu Gupta, inaugurated the Wall Magazine dedicated to the specific day. In her presidential remarks, Dr. Renu Gupta emphasized on the need for the creation of a positive atmosphere for women and projection of structural and institutional changes.

She also stressed upon the promotion of young talent so that they become key agents for change. She suggested the display of wide range of street plays for changing the patriarchal mind set of the society especially in the rural areas to sensitize rural women. It was also emphasized that not only men but women have an equal role to play for the empowerment of their respective gender. She also appreciated the efforts put in by the centre and hoped that it would be instrumental in creating awareness regarding women issues to a wide range of target groups.
