Stone-pelters on bikes attack police stations 73 attackers arrested; 10 bikes seized | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar, Aug 28 (KNS): Hundreds of motorcycle-borne youth pelted stones on various police stations in different parts of Kashmir last night injuring more than a dozen policemen. Police said 73 attackers were arrested and 10 bikes were seized in Nowhatta area of old City where clashes lasted for more than five hours. As Muslims throughout the Kashmir Valley prayed in masjids to observe Shab-e-Qadr, the stone pelters attacked police station Nowhatta, police station Anantnag and police station Bandipora in north Kashmir, reports said. A police spokesman said miscreants attacked Nowhatta Police station during night. “While thousands were praying in different mosques across Kashmir around 300 miscreants pelted stones on Nowhatta police station at about 10.30 o clock in the night. The miscreants had come over from different places of the Srinagar city riding motorcycles,” he said. “These miscreants also tossed two petrol bombs on police .Police arrested 73 miscreants and seized 10 motorbikes during the clashes which lasted for about five hours. Six police men were injured two of them seriously,” he added. Reports said attack of the stone-pelters was so intense that police couldn’t retaliate in time. “The stone pelters also lobbed two petrol bombs on police. The attack created panic among policemen. Immediately reinforcement was sent to the Nowhatta,” a police official told KNS wishing anonymity. Police fired dozens of tear gas shells to disperse the attackers, reports said. However, people in the area alleged that police beat up several people who had gone to perform Shab in historic Jamia Masjid. In Anantnag district dozens of motorcycle-borne stone pelters attacked police station Sherbagh, reports said. “The stone pelting lasted throughout night in which four policemen were injured. Police and para-military CRPF troopers used tear smoke canisters to disperse the protesters,” reports said. A police official told KNS that four stone-pelters were arrested after the incident. In north Kashmir’s Bandipora town local police station was attacked in the similar circumstances. Police have detained four youths in the area this morning, reports said. |
