8/29/2011 10:16:03 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
SRINAGAR, Aug 29:
Srinagar Municipal Corporation today as per the information given by anonymous source raided a house of Rafiq Ahmad Wani, a polythene dealer and seized 80,000 Kg of polythene from his residential place at Wazir Lane Barbar Shah. An FIR was lodged against the offender on spot in Kralkhud Police Station.
The seized polythene was recycled material which is carcinogenic and highly hazardous for human health. SMC has earlier raided at several other places and recovered a fine of Rs 70,000 from the offenders. This has been the biggest seizure so far and shows the quantity of polythene imported in the city by the traders affecting human life and the environment.
On receiving information from confidential source, SMC’s Anti Polythene squad reached the spot and raided the house of an offender Rafiq Ahamd, and successfully seized polythene Carry bags that were hidden in the back yard place of the resident house. “It sent shocking waves down my spine on seeing the back yards of their house full of polythene menace, said a senior most Anti-Polythene squad Official Mir Mansoor.
“Despite given strict warning against the use of polythene, it is sad and disturbing to see how these offenders are not doing away with polythene menace and are responsible for poisoning our environment and people gradually” said joint Commissioner SMC Fayaz Ahmad Bala who was present on spot. “We will not spare them, they will be dragged to Court and a legal action will be taken against the people who will not stop with the polythene practice” he added
Solid Waste Management Officer, SMC Manzoor Ahmad Taray, Media Relation Officer, Masrat Yousuf, Police contingent and various other SMC officials formed part of the raid squad.
