Atmosphere sullied by political desertions | | | The state of Jammu and Kashmir is yet to be free from the hide and seek game being played between the security forces and the militants when it has been swept by the wave of Aaya Rams and Gaya Rams.Thank God these desertions have been taking place outside the premises of the State Assembly. The field is open for all major mainstream political parties, including the Congress, the National Conference, the PDP,the BJP and the Panthers Party.Despite sharing power it seems no restriction has been imposed on the Congress wooing political activists from the National Conference and the vice versa. There have been cases when number of activists belonging to the BJP have crossed over to the PDP,or the National Conference or the Panthers Party. There have been cases when activists of the National Conference have joined the PDP and the latest instance is of Mohd.Aslam Laigroo,a former Commissioner Municipal Corporation,Srinagar.A couple of his supporters to have joined the PDP. There have been instances when activists belonging to the PDP and the NC have exchanged sides.Whenever these desertions take place the defectors usually speak of convictions. They talk about the policies of the party they have joined having influenced them.It is all for public consumption.Frustr ation over being ignored by the party they have been loyal for years is one of the reasons for the desertions. At times the ruling party has seen to it that the deserters are punished or threatened to such an extent that they rejoin their parent organisation. This is what happened in case of G.M.Bawan,a hotelier and a political leader, and Ghulam Qadir Pardesi,a former senior bureaucrat.Years ago Pardesi had joined the PDP but within weeks he quit the party to rejoin the NC when the state was under the NC rule. There are some leaders who quit the parent organisation for greener pastures or for achieving prominence but over the years these established parties have usually sidelined them.A number of leaders had crossed over to the BJP from the NC but most of them were ignored except for Babu Parmanand who was appointed Governor when the BJP led NDA Government was in power in the centre.Usually the fate of the new entrants in the Congress and the NC remains under an eclipse. This has happened in case of one senior BJP leader who crossed over to the Congress a few days before the 2008 Assembly election. Desertions could have surfaced within the State Assembly but the strict anti-defection law has prevented number of MLAs belonging to the BJP,the Congress and the NC from crossing over to other party or to form a separate unit after causing a split in the parent organisation. This is possibly one factor that has prevented the seven BJP MLAs,who have been suspended on charge of anti-party activities, from forming a separate party within the Assembly because under the anti-defection law split can result in disqualification from the House.Invariably defections take place soon after the announcent of the schedule for the Assembly election. Those who are denied tickets in the parent organisation cross over to the rival party for getting the tickets for contesting the election. It is to be seen whether the deserters stick to their new parties when the Assembly election schedule is announced after three years.Though these desertions have no direct or indirect impact on the ruling alliance it definitely sullies the political atmosphere. |
