Congress down and out, advantage BJP | Anna's Crusade | | Rustam JAMMU, Aug 29: Anna Hazare, who sat on fast-unto-death on August 16 to force the arrogant and undemocratic Congress-led UPA Government to accept his demands seeking eradication of corruption and the corrupt, has scored a magnificent victory. He and his team members, plus millions of his supporters across the country, brought to their knees the Manmohan Singh-led government and the cornered and defeated UPA Government adopted on August 27 a resolution endorsing the viewpoint of the determined, committed and unrelenting Anna. The Anna's crusade against corruption which mobilized the exploited and humbled Indian nation in no time and attracted attention at world scale, with the bulk of the Indian media as well as global media giving a maximum coverage in a very positive way, has changed the course of modern Indian history and established that the people's power is supreme and that those at the helm are no more than their servants who are duty bound to accord respect to the people's wish. Indeed, August 27 shall be considered a golden day in the history of the otherwise fake democracy. Anna and the people of the country have shown the Indian political class its rightful place and there are reasons to believe that the Indian political class would think hundred times before taking cudgels with the awakened and political conscious Indians. The Indian political class has caused enough of damage to the nation, looted and plundered the taxpayers' money and made the life of the Indians, barring a very few, a veritable hell on earth. The response Anna's crusade against corruption and other malpractices, plus the official arrogance and smugness, spontaneously evoked across the country, including the exploited to the hilt Jammu province, is a clear proof that the nation is fed up with the political class and that it wants the political class to function strictly as per the people's and the nation's needs. It would be reasonable to say that an important chapter was opened in the modern Indian history on August 27 - a chapter of democratic reforms, which promise to end corruption and empower people. It would be no exaggeration to say that Anna has overshadowed Mahatma Gandhi in the sense that what Anna could achieve Gandhi could not achieve, as also in the sense that Gandhi never enjoyed the kind of support of the people Anna has been enjoying. Gandhi's support-base was basically confined to the Bombay Presidency, United Provinces, Bihar and parts of north India, notwithstanding the fact that the Congress party was always at his back and call. Gandhi had a little following in Bengal and Madras Presidency. Anna, unlike Gandhi, won all the movements, he launched from time to time and, this, notwithstanding the fact that he doesn't control any political formation. He is truly a man of the masses - man not just committed to eradicating corruption and other evils afflicting the polity but also committed to the nation. Some people had thought that Anna would fail or what Anna was trying to achieve was unachievable, but it has happened. The Indian Parliament in one voice adopted the Anna's main lynchpins. Leave aside the corrupt Lalu Prasad Yadav, the UP Chief Minister Mayawati and the so-called members of the civil society like Arundhati Roy, Aruna Roy, Tushar Gandhi, to mention only a few, who opposed what Anna stood for. Also leave aside the Congress' so-called prince Rahul Gandhi who sought to communalize the Anna's crusade against corruption on August 26. His written speech in the Parliament was not only inconsistent with the stand the Prime Minister had finally taken under pressure from below but he also sought to communalize the crusade by saying that the movements like the one Anna engineered had the potential of threatening pluralism in the country. In fact, it was not a speech. It was a manifestation of his frustration. A day later, the Parliament showed Rahul Gandhi and others of his ilk their rightful place when a resolution on strong and effective Lokpal Bill and on the main demands of Anna was adopted both by the ruling coalition and the opposition parties. However, to say all this is not to convey an impression that the people's victory is complete. It is not complete. Even Anna has described it as a half victory and he is right. The defeated Indian political class may try to derail the entire agenda set by Anna. After all, the bulk of Indian political class is corrupt to the core. Then there is bureaucracy, which would be for a status quo. Anna's declaration that he has only suspended the movement and not ended it needs to be viewed in this context. However, at the same time, it has to accepted that Anna's crusade against corruption has set-in-motion a process that would one day culminate in what the harassed, exploited and cheated people of India have been longing for since decades. As for the Congress, it can be said that it is both down and out. It's obvious that it's advantage BJP, notwithstanding its various acts of omission and commission. |
