Govt rigid, opposition silent over demands of arrears, retirement age | State employees get support from surprising quarter: Mirwaiz Omar | | Early Times Report Jammu, Aug 29: The state government employees who have been agitating and intensfying stir for a long time to get their demands fulifilled have got support this time from a surprsing quarter- the separatist leader, chairman of moderate faction of Hurriyat Mirwaiz Omar Farooq, who feels not only injustice has been meted out to them but they have become victims of discrimination , given the fact what they are asking already stands granted to IAS and IPS officers in the J&K state. Mirwaiz , according to an agency report has expressed full suppor and sympathies with the employees, who form a huge chunk , working in various departments across all the three regions of the state. The development is suprising and unexpected for the thousands of employees who under various organisations and cumulatively under the banner of JAC have been striking work intermittently to remind the state government of the promises and assurance it gave last year in terms of granting the arrears of 6th Pay Commission, besides settlement of other demands mainly enhancement of retirement age from present 58 years to 60 years. While support and solidarity from any quarter is welcome for the employees at this stage when no hope is visible from the government, the intervention of separatist leaders into the issue which is normally seen in the domain of government and mainsteram political parties is reflective of many hard realities. One that despite having agreed upon in principle in the agreement reached with the employees leaders , the state government has not only backtracked but continues to be indifferent and rigind in its attitude, particularly some ministers in the Omar Abdullah led coalition who have too critical in remarks over employees' strike rather than expressing and sympathies or trying to explain the compulsions of the government. During the past few months the employees have raised the pitch of their voice, struck work for days together and even warned the government of their intent to intesify their agitation but all this has fallen on deaf ears and government is simply unmoved, unconcrned. The development is also reflective of the void and vacuum of opposition role in the state by almost all the parties which are either too busy with nourshing their political constituencies with political agendas alone or unconcerned like the government . Both PDP and BJP as also smaller parties like J&K Panthers Party and even Kashmir based parties like PDF have failed to rake up the issue of employees and extend support to their demands. Mirwaiz has tried to strike the chord with a sympathetic note and the time could not have been as opportune as now when the festival of Eid is to be clebrated after two days. The senior separatist leader has tried to serve his political constituency with this gesture as the number of employees, particularly from Kashmir is large and apparently it amounts to catering to and caring for the concerns of lakhs of people with just one statement. Earler on it used to be issues like Bijli, Pani Sadak which separatist leaders and even harliner one like Syed Ali Shah Geelani doesn't hesitate to rake up as these relate to entire population and their beetrment, this time voicing concern over employees long pending demands seen as one in the similar direction. One wonders how government as well as opposition parties take this ! |
