NC led govt virtually gives up governance; onus just on completing six years in office | Geelani rules the roost in J&K? | | Syed Junaid Hashmi JAMMU, Aug 29: Blessed by UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, working on the directions of 'clerks' of Union Home Ministry, marred by arrogance and terrorized by separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani, National Conference (NC) led government has virtually given up on governance and is making all efforts to ensure it completes six years. Information department, which is the official mouthpiece of Omar government, does not need to issue clarification nor is it required that two or three coalition ministers would sit together, address a press conference to deny what has now become talk of the town. Governance has gone astray. Insiders maintain that key issues are decided by 'clerks' of Union Home Ministry while rest depends on the political mood swings of firebrand separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani. Geelani rules the roost. It seems that the old hawk controls the administrative set-up of Kashmir region. From Omar's intelligence department to police, all are either on a long leave and have been given the sole responsibility of keeping track of PDP patron Mufti Mohammed Sayeed and his daughter Mehbooba Mufti. News about their political, social and even private meetings has more relevance in Omar's routine. Few in the political and media circles would tell Omar that administration does not mean allowing fanatics and fundamentalists to decide the course of day. Geelani has virtually hijacked the administrative set-up. Instances are many. Geelani recently asked the state government to release all the stone pelters before Eid-ul-Fitr and threatened of launching a full-fledged agitation if his diktat is not obeyed. Insiders maintain that Geelani's aides were busy preparing agitation chart. A frightened state government within days convened a press conference, announcing general amnesty for all the stone pelters while advising those evading arrest to report to respective police stations for being covered under the general amnesty scheme of the state government. Omar did not say 'Hail Geelani' but did increase ailing old man's political significance in the already volatile Kashmir atmosphere. This has been the story since day 1. Geelani said no to 'Dogra certificate and the government immediately obeyed. Concerned minister issued clarification and then kept ringing newspaper offices across Kashmir valley, requesting them to give wide publicity to 'clarification over Dogra certificate'. Government of the day saved its skin. Geelani was appeased and Omar had a sigh of relief. However, none told Omar what a particular newspaper recently wrote in one of its editorials i.e. 'when the policy decisions are determined by mobocracy, ignoring democratic methods of dialogue, debate and consensus and sidelining democratic institutions in simple terms it amounts to anarchy.' Omar has, if all goes well, three more years in office and should focus now on governing the state and stop bending his back before the fundamentalist forces on both sides of the fence. Geelani is a politician and knows well how to keep himself in circulation. The old hawk has terrorized Omar led government to such an extent that his every word is treated sacrosanct and given due respect and regard. If this continues, NC's decision of observing year 2011 as "Year of Women" in the memory of Begum Abdullah would remain a distant dream. They would to first seek an "NOC" from Syed Ali Shah Geelani for celebrating year of women since the old hawk is a staunch fundamentalist and opposed to ideas of 'freedom of women". |
