FONL extends supports to Evacuee Property Tenants Welfare Society | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, August 30: Forum of Lease Holders and Occupants of Nazool/ Government Lands (FONL) has extended its full support to and solidarity with Evacuee Property Tenants Welfare Society, demanding ownership rights to the EP tenants on the residential houses and commercial shops as well as other landed property.
A meeting of the forum held here today under the chairmanship of its Chairman Inderjeet Khajuria congratulated the President EP tenants society, for resorting 72 hour long hunger strike, to focus the attention of the concerned authorities towards their plight and press the demand for conferring ownership rights to the long time tenants, as for the tenants who are there for last 4 to 5 decades.
In fact giving ownership rights to the EP tenants should have formed the part of "Roshni Act", under which ownership rights are to be granted to the lease holders of Nazool and other government lands, on concessional rates, FONL observed.
Inderjeet Khajuria stated that Evacuee Property department is a white elephant and liability, and the tenants should be given the property rights.
The State Government’s plea that the property belongs to the evacuees to Pakistan and POK from 1947 onward and under the Resettlement Act of the State government, the evacuees on return can claim restoration of property in their favor, is weak and untenable.
To accommodate this prevision, the government can dispose of this property to the long time tenants on hire-purchase bases, evaluating the cost at the rates that existed at the time when this property is allotted to the tenants, after deducting the total rent they have already paid.
The present position has been that the income coming to the department from urban property does not even meets the cost incurred on the salaries of the establishment and other expenditure incurred by the department. |
