18 students, 3 security guards injured; university officials mum | Late night clashes in SMVDU | | Mishu Gupta JAMMU, Aug 30: 18 students and three security guards were injured in the late night clashes which broke out inside the campus of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU) Katra. Though the official inside the campus are tightlipped and have outrightly denied of any such incident having taken place inside the campus. But students who were witness to the hooliganism which continued throughout the night confirmed to Early Times that clash was fierce and students both seniors and juniors bashed each other without any fear of being penalized by the university administration. Police sources said that the clash broke out, following an announcement during the fresher's party. They added that as soon as university officials announced name of Ashwani Kumar Rao as cultural secretary of the campus, a group of students began shouting slogans and hurling abuses. Shouting led to heated exchange of words. Following heated exchange of words, a particular group of even students exchanged blows with those supporting Rao. Finding situation going out of control, faculty members and other university officials pacified both the warring groups asking them to leave the venue of fresher's party. Both the groups left the place of incidence, added sources. However, the issue was not over. As soon as the faculty members and the officials left for the respective places, students from both the sides again gathered and began hurling choicest of abuses at each other. Situation once again aggravated with students using hockey sticks, bats, cycle chains, baseball bats and even sticks against each other. It was 'free for all situation' for around half-an-hour inside the campus with students clashing without any fear of getting caught. Security guards who made valiant bids to pacify the agitated students also got injured during the clashes. However, by then, officials had arrived on the scene. They somehow managed to diffuse the situation. "Injured were admitted at Katra hospital for treatment, while two critically injured students have been rushed to GMC hospital. They include Ashwani and Mohit," police sources said adding that campus preferred not to help from the police. In case the university authorities did not take action against the erring students, a senior police official said that they have received a complaint and action is on cards. However, it has been reliably learnt that university officials have warned the students to desist from lodging police complaint. Sources said that from faculty members to students, all have been asked to maintain complete silence over the issue. They stressed that university does not want to allow police inside the campus despite being aware of the fact that the issue is a police case. Early Times has found out from independent sources that despite reservations of certain faculty members, university officials organised the fresher's party in the evening. They said that university should not have held a party so late. "Clash was result of ill-conceived planning of the university officials," added the sources. |
