NC losing ground in Kashmir | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Aug 30: As if everything was alright with the National Conference that its patron has triggered yet another controversy by Venturing into troubled waters. A statement on religion made by Dr Farooq Abdullah has evoked severe reaction in Kashmir. Some people have advised him to refrain from commenting on Islam. Dr Farooq and other leaders of the National Conference, seniors say, must bear in mind that Kashmir has changed. Gone are the days when hearts would beat for NC. According to them, NC has lost its popularity. It is now being perceived as a `stooge' of New Delhi by its erstwhile supporters in Srinagar. This was proved on July 11 when NC observed the death anniversary of Begum Akber Jehan. Sher-e-Kashmir's wife was called popularly known as Mader-e-Meherbaan (Kind mother). This year her death anniversary went un-noticed. Barring few official functions, nothing happened in the Valley. When Sher-e-Kashmir passed away around one million people participated in his funeral. At least five persons got killed in stampedes at various places enroute the final abode of the `beloved' Leader at Hazratbal. Kashmiris were in shock they mourned the death for several days and life came to a standstill into the Valley. The Sheikh family is fast losing its popularity. "This is not good for the party. If Sheikh Family loses its importance, the party cannot survive", believe some senior members said. The apprehensions of the senior members are not totally unfounded. The National Conference has been losing ground in Kashmir valley especially in South Kashmir since 2002. The organization has not done well in Jammu and Ladakh during the past elections. For the first time in the history of Kashmir, members of the ruling National Conference party have deserted the organization. National Conference received a shock the other day when its Youth Block President, Mukhtiyar Ahmad Dar and ex- Corporator Peer Parvaiz Ahmad from Khanyaar Constituency joined Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) along with their workers. This is the second incident of its kind since July 16 when members from ruling National Conference have joined the PDP. Earlier senior NC worker, Ghulam Qadir Parray from Zainakote joined PDP along with his colleagues. He accused the NC leadership of patronizing goons. Addressing the function Parray said he was impressed by the `pro-people' policies of the PDP. |
