Early Times Report
Jammu, Aug 31: A day after the news of clashes inside SMVDU was reported in this paper, a group of parents of the students have expressed serious concern over what happened in the campus previous night which led to injuries to many, including students of the University. They have demanded probe into the matter, besides strict action against those responsible for instigating and indulging in trouble. The parents have also asked the University authorities to take strict measures to check reoccurrence of such incident within the campus.
In a statement, they have alleged that incident is reflective of some ugly things which should be checked in right earnest or else it will spread ugly tentacles in such institution of academic excellence. On what the parents have come to know from eyewitness accounts, the parents have further given their account which substantiates the incident was of quite grave nature. The statement said that students from a particular group, belonging to one area, came out in gangs, duly camouflaged and carrying all kinds of weapons like iron-rods, hammers, spades and sharp-edged-weapons-knives etc. attacked students of another hostel. They first ransacked and damaged hostel property, criminally assaulted the hostel guards and then the students, some of whom were sleeping in their rooms.
The parents alleged that scores of students were injured, most injured have fractured legs and arms, and some have head injuries as had been hit by something like a hammer. "We have come to know that there was some introductory party in the evening where some vocal words of some anger were exchanged between two sections of students......... It has come to our information that some of the staff members tried to pacify the students and warned them lest they involve in any kind of misconduct. But one of the section didn’t pay any heed to it .....", the statement said.
There has been a clear lack of responsibility on the part of authorities who have failed to pre empty the gravity of the situation and make sufficient arrangement to avoid any such mishap. Expressing concern and worry over safety of their wards, the parents have said the eyewash action taken by the Police also speaks of the callousness of the law enforcing authorities to book the culprits. "It is a sheer chance that no one has been fatally injured. The mischief mongers should be booked under anti-Ragging and other laws of CPC. "We as parents and guardians of children studying in the SMVDU are highly worried about the safety of our wards........", they said adding that no laxity can be tolerated in such an institute which carries the name of Holy Shree Mata Vaishno Devi.
The parents have asserted that the Government and the SMVDU authorities should not compromise in any way, investigate properly and take strict action under the laws of the land to prevent any such incident in future and save the prestige of the institution.
