Amnesty for stone peters, backtracking on commitment for 2008 Jammu cases?
BJP questions Congress, PP silence, NC intentions

Early Times Report
JAMMU, Aug 31: Three days after Chief Minister Omar Abdullah announced general amnesty to the youth of Kashmir who were arrested last year on charges of stone pelting, BJP today questioned his intentions and also alleged the move was reflective of discrimination with Jammu youth who continue to face cases related with 2008 Amarnath land agitation. BJP has also tried to corner rival Congress over the issue for what it alleges their silence towards Jammu oriented issues despite being coalition partner in the ruling dispensation.
Raking up the discrimination card once again BJP has lashed out at the Chief Minister for applying two yardsticks in one state- one in Kashmir and other in Jammu where it negates and contradicts it own criteria and yardstick adopted in such measures. As one in opposition, BJP has rightly so hit out at government , though few days later when he announced amnesty decision but BJP perhaps chose to wait for appropriate time. It could not have been better than most appropriate and opportune occasion than the function in connection with 3rd anniversary of Amarnath land row which is being commemorated here in Jammu by some organisations as "Swabhiman Divas".
Call it political bashing or opposition rhetoric, the BJP reaction has in its fold critical questions that exposes and hits Congress more than NC . The statement has come from Chief Spokesperson and member national executive Dr Jitender Singh who was in the forefront of Sangharsh Samiti three years back which steered the movement in Jammu. Lashing out at the State Government for applying different yardsticks in Kashmir and in Jammu. His point has relevance and weightage. Dr Singh has questioned the coalition's bonafides in ordering general amnesty for stone-pelter agitating youth of Kashmir valley and at the same time remaining indifferent for such cases in Jammu, indeed the nature of crimes is different. However, his one more vital contention is that government is virtually backing out on its commitment to withdraw cases against the Jammu youth who participated in the nationalist Amarnath land row agitation in 2008 as there is a properly and duly signed agreement between the government and Samiti whereas CM has only made a verbal announcement which is being implemented so promptly.
As always BJP has rightly so questioned the silence of Congress which has neither tried to assert on Jammu matters like this when such crucial decisions are taken by the coalition nor ever tried to question repercussions of political moves which NC takes to nourish and address its political constituency of Kashmir.
The BJP's statement may fall on deaf ears of the coalition but Congress has an opportunity and moral duty to assert on such issues so that Jammu can feel it relates to the sense of discrimination felt on all spheres. BJP leader, nevertheless has called for immediate withdrawal of all pending cases, release of gratia to the affected families and compensation to business establishments as promised in the August 31, 2008 agreement which was duly signed on behalf of the government by the Governor's Advisor. One wonders whether anyone would listen to these cries.
Not only Congress is silent over the issue one more political party JKNPP which claims to be sympathizers of Jammu people always championing the cause of discrimination as its political agenda is astonishingly a mute spectator to all these developments.
