Emphasis to be laid on setting up solar energy plants
9/1/2011 9:20:22 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu Sep 1: With the support from the Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Farooq Abdullah, Jammu and Kashmir is poised for adding about 20,000 MWs of electricity in another 10 years.
Official sources said that Farooq Abdullah has assured the state authorities that plans were being formulated and executed so that by next one decade state was not only self-sufficient in electricity but could export it to other states.
Sources said that the main purpose of the plans was to produce more power from water and wind energy to minimize the huge expenditure incurred through exploitation of conventional sources of energy that could ensure environmental balance.
According to these sources, solar energy plants were being set up not only in some towns and in two capital cities but in remote areas especially Kargil and Leh districts too. Private entrepreneurs were being motivated to help the Government in setting up solar energy plants for which basic financial and technical assistance was to be provided by the Ministry for New and Renewable energy.
Reports said that Abdullah has convinced the central Government on the need for providing additional financial and technical support to solar energy system in Jammu and Kashmir after Pakistan had been raising one hurdle or the other over the setting up of new hydel power pojects.
Farooq Abdullah has drawn the attention of his Ministry's senior functionaries on sustained campaign launched by Pakistan against setting up Baglihar, Uri, Dul Hasti and now Kishenganga power projects.
As a result of Pakistan's campaign against alleged violation of Indus Water Treaty by India the commissioning of hydel power projects in Jammu and Kashmir would get delayed by five to eight years thereby resulting in huge cost escalation. Abdullah believes that to escape this problem the state has to bank on solar energy plants.(KIP)
