KV-1 Gandhi Nagar wins Regional cricket tourney | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Sports & Allied News JAMMU, Sept 01: Kendriya Vidyalya (KV) No. 1 Gandhi Nagar clinched the thriller to win 42nd Inter-KVs (U-16) Regional Crickt Tournament which was hosted by KV-2 Jammu Cantonment, here today. In a nail-biting finish, KV Gandhi Nagar defeated equally good side of KV Anantnag by eight wickets. Needing eight runs to win in final 15th over, Gandhi Nagar boys reached the target in the second last delivery losing only two wickets. It was Pranab, who made all the difference in the title clash. He not only hit the ball for a six in the last over, but also guided the team to victory contributing unbeaten 67 runs studded with five sixes and four hits to the fence. Earlier, batting first, KV Anantnag set a challenging target of 114 runs for the loss of six wickets in five 15 overs. Shoaib played brilliant innings of 51 runs including three sixes and four boundaries. Rahil contributed 23 runs. From KV Gandhi Nagar, Ashank and Sidharth took two wickets each. In reply, KV Gandhi Nagar played steady innings and well maintained the required run rate. In the final 15th over, the side was in need of eight runs to win. The target was achieved in 14.5 overs with eight wickets in hand. Besides Pranab’s 67, Viren also played well adding valuable 31 runs. Rahil and Muneer bagged one wicket each from KV Anantnag. Earlier, in the semifinals, played yesterday, Gandhi Nagar trounced KV-3 Amritsar by a margin of six runs. Batting first, after winning the toss, KV Gandhi Nagar set a target of 84 runs for the loss of seven wickets in given 20 overs. Viren was top scorer with unbeaten 42 while Ashank contributed 23 runs to the total. From KV Amritsar, Dheeraj and Amit shared two wickets each. Batting second, KV Amritsar could not reach the required total and the whole side bowled out for 77 runs in 16.5 overs. Aakash and Davinder were main contributors with 25 and 26 runs in their respective accounts. Sagar and Viren clinched three wickets each from winners KV Gandhi Nagar. In other semi-final, KV Anantnag made it a big 67 runs win against KV Jandrah. Batting first, KV Antantnag set a target of 109 runs losing all their wickets in 18 overs of the 20 overs game. Rahil scored highest 24 runs coming off 22 deliveries including four hits to the fence. Mubasir contributed 18 while Waseem and Hazik added 13 runs each. From KV Jandrah, Ashish and Sourav took three wickets each while Amit took two. Later, KV Jandrah could not face the bowling wrath of KV Anantnag and the whole side bundled out for just 41 runs in 17 overs. No batsman could score in double figure. Shubam was highest with nine runs. In the final and valedictory function, Superintendent of Police, Ashok Sharma was chief guest, who distributed medals among winners and runners-up teams. He congratulated both the teams for the fighting spirit. In his address, Principal of the host KV-2 Jammu Cantonment, M Laxmi Narayan wished the selected cricketers, out of this tournament, a success in the forthcoming national KVs meet. He was all praise for the technical staff comprised of Varinder Sharma (SAI), Naveen Sharma and Randhir Singh (both State Sports Council) as also the teaching and other staff for making the event a success.
