Government steps in to tame Baba Ramdev | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Sept 1: There seems to be no end to the Government inflicted woes to the Yoga Guru Baba Ramdev, who in fact fired the first salvo against the Congress led Government for its inability to bring back black money stashed in the foreign banks. Ramdev embarked on a protest fast in Delhi in the first week of May in order to motivate the Congress led UPA Government to initiate action against those who had stashed huge sums of money in foreign banks. First the senior ministers were sent to the airport to strike a deal with the Yoga Guru. Whether there was some agreement between the two sides or not Baba Ramdev's protest fast attracted huge crowds. It unnerved the Government and the Delhi police ordered a crackdown on the Yoga Guru and his supporters. Scores of these followers were detained and later let off and Ramdev was bundled out of the grounds and was sent to Hardiwar Ashram. Stage by stage and step by step Various Government agencies started blaming the Yoga Guru for various frauds including income tax evasion. His close associate, Balkrishan, was subjected to a witch hunt on charge of having prepared his passport through submission of fake documents. He was accused of having committed a fraud by claiming to be a citizen of India when he and his parents were Nepalese. For several weeks Baba Ramdev and Balkrishan seemed to have preferred to lie low even after having debunked all the Government charges. And soon after Baba Ramdev staged a comeback by participating in the pro-Anna protest demonstrations the Government thought it better to act against him. The latest action against him has been initiated by the Enforcement Directorate. Reports said that the Yoga guru Ramdev and his Haridwar-based trusts have been booked by the Enforcement Directorate in a case of alleged foreign exchange violation, official sources said today. The Directorate registered the case on the basis of inputs from abroad on "suspicious" financial transactions, they said How many big businessmen have been booked by the ED for foreign exchange violations ?Not many. Why then Ramdev has been brought under the ED umbrella? The reason is simple. Baba Ramdev, despite Government tirade against him, continues to have the biggest number of followers. The Baba is a household name and he still has the energy and reputation to set the Ganges on fire. The Government has reports that if Baba Ramdev was allowed to jump into bandwagon of Anna's supporters things could be quite difficult for the Congress. Hence to force Ramdev to be on the defensive the Enforcement Directorate has been asked to act. What is intriguing is the way that for over a decade the Baba was not touched. He was shown to have been involved in various scams only after he sounded the bugle against the Government. |
