Early Times Report
JAMMU, Sept 1: The Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine besides catering to the spiritual needs of millions of people across the country has been instrumental in sharpening the intellectual faculties of thousands of students irrespective of class, creed, gender and faith. But as they say Chiraag Talay Andhera (nearer the church farther from God), complaints ranging from sexual harassment to sheltering rouge elements have brought a bad name to the university named after the revered goddess. The University has been accused of patronizing sexually starved people and manufacturing criminals.
Early Times is in possession of a written complaint of some girl students who have accused a particular teacher of a particular department of sexually assaulting them. Identifying the erring teacher, the complaint reads: "He pats on the back and sometimes even on cheeks, which makes most of the girls feel uneasy. Sometimes during the discussion he makes remarks like apne yeh dress pehna hai…kya mujhese puchke pehna hai…agar is ka gala aur deep hota…cut sleeves hota…etc." (you have not consulted me before wearing this dress. If only it were without sleeves, it would look nice).
The teacher, according to the complaint had uttered sentences like 'aap aur mai is resort mein jaenge room mein akele rahenge" during the lst semester when the students were on a resort as the design project.
Reports from the campus suggest that the Governor, NN Vohra was fully aware of the development. In fact he has urged the concerned to look into the matter. The aggrieved students and their parents have sought intervention of the Governor to end the ordeal.
The University is once again in news for bad reasons. Violent clashes between students have hogged the headlines this time. Scared parents have demanded probe into the clashes and strict punishment to the guilty.
Two days ago students from a particular group, belonging to one area, came out in gangs, duly camouflaged and carrying all kinds of weapons like iron-rods, hammers, spades and sharp-edged-weapons-knives etc. attacked students of another hostel. They first ransacked and damaged hostel property, criminally assaulted the hostel guards and then the students, some of whom were sleeping in their rooms, reports said.
Reports added that there was some introductory party in the evening where angry words were exchanged between two sections of students. Although some teachers tried to pacify the warring groups but some did not heed them.
The aggrieved parents have accused the authorities of inaction and succumbing before unscrupulous elements.
Pertinent to mention the Mata Vaishno Devi University has been achieved by the people of Jammu after a valiant struggle that lasted more than two months in 1998. The institution is neither funded by the state nor by the University Grants Commission (UGC). It is funded by the Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board. However, the university is not just meant for the students professing a particular faith. It welcomes students across the country irrespective of their faith, caste or creed.
