UNESCO launches heritage protection campaign

Srinagar, Dec 3
Director UNESCO, Mina Yang today had an interaction with various Heads of important department concerning revival of heritage in the valley. The meeting which was first of its kind focussed its attention on pooling all the resources together for revival and protection of heritage sites. The Director UNESCO, pointed out that Kashmir is rich with its proud heritage and various themes are to be developed under the umbrella of which all sites can be preserved.
In the meeting water bodies were considered as the live heritage points while as emphasis was also laid to take all appropriate steps to protect dying Anchar and Dal Lake, where there is still scope to revive with endeavours of all concerned. The meeting discussed proper protection and preservation of Budhist sites at Harwan.
Mazaar Salatain, Shrines of Bul Bul Shah, Khan Kahi Mohallah, Jamia Masjid, Hari Parbat fort, Shanker Acharaya, Takti Sulaimani, Jehangir canals feeding water to Shalimar and Nishat gardens, palaces of Kings, their tombs, art pieces and Manuscript available in the museums were the subject matter of discussion.
Director UNESCO also pointed out that more emphasis is required to be laid for providing quality education to the students and also reorient tourism structures in such a fashion so that it becomes heritage oriented and knowledge bank of age old civilization. It was also pointed out in the meeting that wet land protection should be ensured so that the birds who migrate from Siberia and Central Asian countries to Kashmir are able to enjoy the natural surroundings. It was decided in the meeting that UNESCO in collaboration with Tourism department, Education department, Information department, Municipal Corporation, LAWDA, Archives department shall launch awareness and partnership programmes with the aim to create sense of awareness among people for protection of heritage sites and creation of knowledge banks for the same.
The meeting was attended by Vice Chairman LAWDA, Mr. Azgar Samoon, Director Information, Khwaja Farooq Renzu, Director Tourism, Mr. Farooq Ahmad Shah, Director Education, Mr. Rafi Ahmad, Director Archives, Mr. Qadri, Director Environment, Mr. Shamim, Joint Director Tourism, Mr. Sarwat Hafiz, Health Officer, Municipality Dr. Shafaqat and convenor INTAC, Mr. Saleem Beigh.
