Independent MLA to move resolution on Afzal Guroo
9/1/2011 11:14:20 PM
Early Times Report
JAMMU, Sept 1: Engineer Rashid, the sitting independent MLA from Langate assembly constituency has decided to move a resolution in the forthcoming session of the State Legislative Assembly seeking clemency to Afzal Guroo whose mercy petition has already been rejected by the President, Pratibha Devi Patel. The session of the State Legislature has been convened in Srinagar by Governor, N.N. Vohra on 26th of this month.
Engineer Rashid has told reporters in Kupwara district that he has submitted a resolution to the speaker of the State Legislative Assembly seeking clemency for Afzal Guroo who is on the death row in Tihar Jail in Delhi.
The independent MLA has sought that his resolution seeking clemency for the Parliament attack convict be put to vote in the 87-member Legislative Assembly during its forthcoming session.
Engineer Rashid has also maintained that his submission of the resolution on the controversial issue was not prompted by the recent comments posted by State Chief Minister Omar Abdullah who expressed his wonder whether a resolution in the State Assembly seeking clemency to Afzal Guroo would attract the same muted response the Tamil Nadu assembly resolution seeking clemency to killers of former Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi had evoked.
Omar Abdullah subsequently tweeted the decision to move the resolution taken by Engineer Rashid had been prior to his post on the subject.
The BJP has launched a scathing attack on the Chief Minister arguing that his comments are basically an attempt by Omar Abdullah to please the Kashmiri separatists.
There is a growing reaction to the comments posted by Omar Abdullah on the controversial issue. Though some commentators still maintain Omar Abdullah has been justified in arguing that what happened in the aftermath of the Tamil Nadu assembly resolution would definitely not have happened had a similar development occurred in the State Assembly.
Yet there can be no doubt that the Chief Minister has unnecessarily landed himself in the centre of another unpleasant controversy. Should Omar Abdullah, the man necessarily make a comment that embarrasses Omar Abdullah the Chief Minister? Why has the youngest Chief Minister in the country decided to rake up controversies over controversies through his IT savvy habit of remaining in touch with his followers? And, is it all right for a Chief Minister to tweet as quickly and as often so as to convey an impression that the man in charge of the most difficult State in the country has ample time at his disposal that he can continue tweeting when other matters of more serious nature can wait or be allowed to be decided by his juniors?
It is not going to be very easy for the ruling NC to stay away from the voting process if the resolution submitted by Engineer Rashid is allowed by the speaker of the State Assembly to be put to vote. It is also going to be a no-win situation for the NC's allies in the Congress to stay away or remain silent during the voting process on the contentious resolution.
The secular, nationalist image of the young Chief Minister is widely accepted in the country. But, the impression that he can continue to make controversial comments on sensitive and highly volatile issues like the fate of the man who has been convicted for attack on the country's Parliament must not be stretched too far. The Chief Minister has many more matters of urgency to address and focus his attention on. He cannot be seen as the champion of lost causes especially when such causes have a national implication. If the NC now accuses the BJP for trying to do politics by attacking the Chief Minister for his comments, can't it be said without any fear of rebuttal that the Chief Minister was also doing politics by trying to champion a lost cause?
