Work on India’s longest road tunnel gets underway | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Sep 2: Work on the construction of India's longest road tunnel today was initiated at Chenani where the first blast was made on the lower Shivalik hills at exactly 3:45 PM. The work of carving out a 9 kms long two lane road tunnel shall take five years for its completion. This prestigious and ambitious project on its completion would link tehsil Chenani to district Ramban of Jammu and Kashmir on NH-1A thereby shortening the total computable distance of tedious 35 kms stretch to just 9 kms. The tunnel is being constructed in a landslide prone zone of NH-1A which often results in snagging of the only road linking Jammu and Kashmir to the rest of the country during bad weather conditions. Briefing the media persons about the prestigious project, Managing Director, Leighton Welspun Contractors Pvt. Ltd., Russell Waugh, said that he was very pleased to see this nationally important project underway. “It is not only a landmark project in the history of India’s transportation network but would bring increased safety and employment to the local community”, the Managing Director asserted and said that our focus is to complete the project on schedule and to be an integral part of Jammu’s progress and development. Leighton Welspun runs its own training school for skilled workers and has helped train many people from the local community to work on the project. “Leighton Welspun is committed to training and developing people as a key part of our business in India”, said Waugh. Leighton Welspun also runs a graduate employment program and has engaged a large number of engineering graduates from Jammu to join its project team, he further apprised. The tunnel provides an all-weather route that will result in a significant time savings to motorists travelling along NH-1A between Jammu and Srinagar. It will be one of the longest road tunnels in Asia, and the longest in India. Leighton Welspun’s scope of work includes total responsibility for design and construction of the tunnel and its associated approaches. This includes all civil, structural, architectural, mechanical, electrical, power distribution, ventilation, lighting, SCADA, fire control system, video surveillance, traffic control, emergency call and communications works. Project Director, Edgar Ramani on the occasion presented the silent feature of the Chenani –Nashri Tunnel Project.
