CM’s announcement to give powers to Panchayats just an eyewash: PDP
9/2/2011 10:06:12 PM
Early Times Report
JAMMU, September 2: Ridiculing recent announcement of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to give to powers to the Panchayats, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) today said that announcement of Chief Minister was nothing but an eyewash to befool the people.
In a joint statement issued here today, PDP leaders pointed out that instead of empowering the Panchayats in real sense, the Chief Minister has been trying to divert attention of the people by giving such misleading statements.
They said that announcement of the Chief Minister to give an meager amount of Rs one lakh to each Panchayat for development activities was a cruel joke with the elected representatives of the people.
They said that Panchayats can be empowered only by giving them decision making powers but the government has just announced an amount of Rs one lakh to befool the people. They regretted that instead of empowering the Panchayats constitutionally, the government was doing just a lip service.
“There is nothing substantial in the recent statement Chief Minister in which he has claimed to give powers to the Panchayats”, PDP leaders said and asked the Chief Minister to take some effective steps to empower the Panchayats.
PDP leaders said that intentions of the Chief Minister were not clear about giving powers to the Panchayat and this was the reason that he has been giving such statements just to create confusion among the people.
PDP leaders said that government headed by National Conference has been working with dictatorial mindset and this regime was never interested to trickle down power at grass root level.
Party leaders, however, said that PDP has already announced to launch an agitation for the empowerment of the Panchayats. They said that entire exercise of conducting Panchayat elections would be proved futile if newly elected Panchayats were not empowered properly.
They said that Panchayati Raj Institutions in the state can be made functional only by empowering the Panchayats.
Signatories of the statement are Sardar Rangil Singh, Trilok Singh Bajwa, Thakur Balbir Singh, Ved Mahajan, Daman Bhasin, Shanti Devi, Falail Singh, Hussain Ali Bafa and Jagjit Singh Jagga.
