Hanging Of Guru
Omar revolts, Congress continues to play with dangerous tools
9/3/2011 9:55:41 AM

STARK REALITY
RUSTAM
JAMMU, Sep 2:Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has decided to take cudgels with New Delhi to force it to review its stand on the dreaded Kashmiri terrorist Afzal Guru, who along with other terrorists, planned and executed the greatest onslaught on Indian democracy. They had attacked the temple of Indian democracy, the Parliament, and their objective was to liquidate the Indian leadership and create lawlessness and anarchy in the country. They failed to accomplish their evil design. For, our alert and watchful security forces frustrated their design and in the process the nation lost seven precious lives. The Indian judiciary has pronounced Guru guilt and awarded his death sentence.
The Union Government, which dragged its feet for years for the sake of vote-bank politics, finally knelt and sent the file to the President of India with the note that the clemency petition of Guru should be rejected in the interest of the rule of law. The President of India can clear the file anytime and once it happens, Guru would be hanged till death. It is this decision of the Union Government that has provoked Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to the extent that he has virtually suggested that he may make the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly pass a resolution similar to the one passed by the Tamil Nadu Assembly a few days ago urging New Delhi not to execute the killers of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. His suggestion has alarmed the nation because what Omar Abdullah has said and done was calculated to make New Delhi subvert the rule of law so that Guru is allowed to walk free and he could pander to a particular constituency in Kashmir.
Remember, Omar Abdullah did not respond to media queries on Wednesday, when a number of political parties, including the BJP, reacted sharply and dismissed the Omar’s suggestion as “unfortunate and irresponsible.” As for the Congress, it did not pay any heed to the outrageous tweet of Omar’s. It simply said India was a democratic country and everyone had the right to express his/her views freely and fearlessly. The Congress took this mind-boggling stand overlooking the fact that the suggestion had not been made by the Hurriyat leaders; the suggestion had been made by the Chief Minister who was under oath to protect the Indian Constitution, the Indian unity and integrity and the territorial integrity of India. In other words, a constitution authority had sought to wreck the constitution from within. Had such a development taken place in Pakistan, or for that matter in any other country, strict action would have been taken against the one seeking to subvert the mandate and constitution.
The stand taken by the Congress has emboldened the erring Chief Minister to the extent that he boldly stated yesterday that “I will not say no to twitter.” He did not withdraw his outrageous suggestion, thus making the situation for the state Congress piquant. The Congress in Jammu and Kashmir would be adversely impacted by the position taken by the Chief Minister. The Congress’ core constituency is Jammu and everyone knows that the people of Jammu province hate and despise those who work against the Indian nation, promote separatism and communalism and subvert the rule of law to secure the release of dreaded terrorists and barbarous killers.
It is strange that not a single Congress leader or single Congress minister has mustered the courage to tell the Chief Minister to behave failing which the Congress would snap all its ties with the NC and come out of the terrorist and killer-friendly NC. Indeed, the Congress is playing with dangerous tools.
