Pakistani guns silent since yesterday after violation of ceasefire
9/3/2011 9:36:21 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
Srinagar, Sep 3 : Pakistani guns are silent since yesterday after violating the 2003 ceasefire four times since Friday in the frontier district of Kupwara in Jammu and Kashmir.

A Defence Ministry spokesman Lt Colonel J S Brar told UNI that there was no report of any ceasefire violation since yesterday by Pakistani troops.

The guns are now silent, he said, adding there were four ceasefire violations in Keran and Karnah sectors since Friday.

However, he said, "we did not suffer any damage due to firing by the Pakistani troops." He said on Friday Indian troops also retaliated when Pakistani troops targetted some forward posts near the Line of Control (LoC).

The damage suffered by Pakistani troops in retaliation was not known, he said.

However, media reports across the border said that three Pakistani soldiers were killed.

Lt Col Brar said ' Our troops exercised utmost restraint and did not retaliate on Saturday.

Official sources said that the main aim of Pakistani firing was to provide a cover to militants to infiltrate into this side.

Last month 15 militants were killed in Gurez sector and Handwara areas near the LoC after they sneaked into this side.

More than 10 infiltration attempts were scuttled by the troops guarding border, who had intensified night and foot patrolling near the LoC.

They said a large number of militants are waiting at '' Launch Pads'' near the LoC in Pakistan-occupied- Kashmir (PoK) waiting for an opportunity to sneak into this side before the onset on winter when all the infiltration routes are closed due to about 12 to 20 feet of snowfall.

GOC 15 Corps Lt General S A Hasnain had already expressed apprehension that a large number of militants will try to infiltrate into this side in September and October months.

He said militant leaders across the border are frustrated and wanted to revive the militancy after their top leadership was killed by the security forces in the Kashmir valley during the past two months.
