Udhampur, Poonch win ties in women’s U-19 cricket

JAMMU, Sept 03: District Udhampur and Poonch girls made a winning start outplaying the their opponents from city schools in the women’s under-19 (Twenty20) cricket tournament, organised by Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA) in cooperation with Department of Youth Services and Sports (DYSS) at GGM Science College Hostel Ground, here today.
In the inaugural match of the day, district Udhampur outplayed Government Higher Secondary School Mubarak Mandi girls by one wicket. Earlier, Udhampur won the toss and opted to field. Batting first, Mubarak Mandi girls set a target of 99 runs for four in given 20 overs.
Babita Manhas was top scorer with unbeaten 21 while Sunali and Palak Dogra contributed 13 and nine runs respectively. From Udhampur, Reshma, Shivani and Bindia shared one wicket each.
In reply, Udhampur attained the goal in 16 overs losing nine wickets. Extras contributed a lot of runs in Udhampur’s total. However, Padma was top scorer with eight runs made from bat. Palak Dogra was most successful bowler with four wickets, followed by Staffy and Indu, who shared two each.
In the second match of the day, district Poonch defeated Government Girls Higher Secondary School Canal Road rather comfortably by eight wickets.
Batting first, Canal Road girls made 138 runs for the loss of eight wickets. Again, extras played a key role because no player could touch the double figure mark. From Poonch, Tasleen and Simran took one wicket each.
In reply, Poonch chased the total in 11.2 over for the loss of their two wickets. Tasleem was top scorer with 14 runs while Mehreen contributed 12.
Earlier, the tournament was declared open by chairman of JKCA, Mohd Aslam Goni, who was chief guest. Among others present were Deputy Director DYSS, S S Bali and office bearers of the Association.
The participating teams in this knock-out tournament included those from district Udhampur, Poonch, Rajouri, Samba, Kathua and government as as well as private educational institutions.
