Khimber residents thwart SMC plan to construct ponds for dogs | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar, Sept 3 (KNS): Residents of Khimber in the outskirts of Srinagar Saturday refused to allow Srinagar Municipal Corporation authorities to construct ponds for dogs in the area. The residents warned the government to withdraw the construction plan or face public confrontation. The refusal is likely to hamper the government’s plans to control the increasing number of man-animal conflict incidents in the city. Commissioner SMC Sheikh Mushtaq Ahmad told KNS that their efforts to persuade the citizens of Khimber failed. He said that the High Court had directed the SMC to construct ponds for the dogs at Khimber within 15 days. “However, the citizens of the area have raised objections and are not allowing SMC to carry out the work,” he added. According to the court order, SMC had to construct some 1800 ponds for more than 90,000 dogs in the outskirts of the City. Sheikh Mushtaq said that the Court had asked Revenue department to identify places for the purpose. “Revenue department proposed three places at Pandrathan, Chetrahama and Khimber. While Pandrethan and Chetrahama were rejected due to lack of road connectivity and other feasibility, at Khimber people have raised objections,” he told KNS. Mushtaq said that the Advisory Committee headed by him had expressed reservations against the plan in its report submitted to the High Court. “However, the Additional Advocate General pleaded before the Court to go ahead with the idea,” he said. The SMC Commissioner said that he had requested Inspector General of Police for protection. “However, the IGP was in favor of mutual consensus rather than using force.” Meanwhile the residents of Khimber have warned the government to hold back its plans of constructing the ponds. “We will not allow the government to construct the ponds for dogs at any cost. Let anybody from the government come there with bulldozers and other machinery, we are ready to die to safeguard our interests,” they said. “We are planning to approach the court with objections,” they told KNS. Refusing to accept any government jobs and incentives, the citizens including the newly elected Sarpanhs of the area said, “The land is main source of our earnings and is being used for grazing cattle which is backbone of our economy,” they added. Meanwhile the SMC is all set to launch a sterilization campaign for dogs in the coming days with the help of Sheri-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology and Department of Veterinary Sciences at Shuhama.
