Panthers celebrate Iftaar at Leh, discuss problems
9/3/2011 9:56:15 PM
EARLY TIMES
Leh, Sep 3: It was for the first time that the Panthers Party hosted a historic Iftaar in Leh which was attended by prominent Ladakhi notables including politicians, diplomats, members of the civil society namely the chairman of Ladakh Hill Council, senior Congress leader P. Namgyal, Ambassador, P. Stabdon, chairman of Anjumane Islamia, Angmo Shanoo, former Director-DD, present Director-DD in Leh and several advocates, artists and other religious leaders.
After hosting Iftaar in Srinagar on 27 th August, in Jammu on 28th August, it was cordial Iftaar in Leh on 29th August followed by last Iftaar in this years’ Iftaar on 30th at Kargil.
The Panthers Party takes this matter as a pride that it is only this leadership which has a constructive, positive and meaningful communication with the people of all the three regions irrespective of their caste, religion or otherwise. The response to Iftaar get-together was unique and highly cooperative.
As far the development in Leh and Kargil is concerned, the Panthers Party feels that several areas in both the districts continued to be most backward particularly in Nobra, Janskar, Dras etc.
There are areas in Nobra and in Dras sector where people eat sattoo (barley). Where there is no road connection and no drinking water facilities.
It is a matter of shame that in six decades the State government could not supply power (electricity) in the region though there is only brief supply in the city of Leh.
¾ th of Ladakh region has no road connectivity and the people have been living in the stone age even today.
Marwah-Dachhen (Kishtwar) can only be compared with the situation in this region.
235 km of road between Leh and Kargil is horrible. The construction work is going on with a rat speed. 203 kms. distance between Kargil and Srinagar is horrifying.
The Panthers Party demands that Janskar-Leh road (98 kms.) should be completed at the earliest, which was proposed by Indira Gandhi in 1974-75 and still under construction. This is necessary to bring the people of Janskar close to the rest of the world. There is a need to give first preference to drinking water, power, medical care in the region. It is shocking that Leh and Kargil did not have even an educational institution of the level of a college. There is a need to open the university camps both in Leh and Kargil.
