Kishtwar saffron growers allege discrimination, seek share in production
9/3/2011 10:53:51 PM
Early Times Report
JAMMU, Sept 3: Saffron growers in Kishtwar district are agitated over the raw deal being given to them by the government as far as providing financial and technical support for saffron cultivation is concerned.
In support of their contention, they referred to the government plan for introducing sprinkle irrigation facilities to saffron fields in the Kashmir valley. The Kishtwar saffron growers maintain that successive state governments have neglected saffron cultivation in Kishtwar and adjoining areas because of which production figures have remained static and there has not been any major improvement in the quality of the saffron buds.
Against this, several hundred crores of rupees have been spent on improving saffron cultivation and production in the Kashmir valley. However, senior functionaries of the department of Horticulture, Planning and Marketing said that after expert opinion, department has decided to introduce sprinkle irrigation.
Explaining it, they said that measures were afoot for providing water for sprinkler irrigation for saffron fields by tapping ground water resources through installation of tube wells. These facilities were being developed on the saffron fields in Pulwama, Srinagar and Budgam districts in the valley.
They said that since Kashmiri saffron has world market, government plans to increase production from 8.5 metric tones to over 10 metric tones within a couple of years. They said that after saffron cultivation and production in the Kashmir valley touched a new high, government will initiate measures for improving saffron cultivation, production and quality in Kishtwar.
In reply to a question the authorities said that it was wrong to accuse the government of giving a raw deal to Kishtwar saffron growers. They said that during the last five years saffron production in Kishtwar has increased by more than 25 percent. “Our aim is to double saffron export which could prove a major foreign exchange earner after the fruits and handicrafts for Jammu and Kashmir,” horticulture officials said.
