In Afzal Guru hanging controversy, BJP trying to salvage lost pride

JAMMU, Sept 3: Taking advantage of muted silence adopted by Congress and confusion prevailing within ranks of National Conference, state unit of BJP is trying to regain its lost ground in Jammu region by channelizing people’s anger over the issue of capital punishment for Parliament attack convict Mohd Afzal Guru.
In the last three-four days, state BJP leaders have tried their level best to mobilize people against the utterances of the state Chief Minister and is planning to launch a more comprehensive and sustained campaign at the grassroot level. The party, which was lying low after the charges of cross voting left them red faced, BJP is desperate to resurrect its lost pride ahead of the local body elections.
To spread awareness among the common masses, party has chalked out detailed program to regularly hold protest demonstrations against the ruling dispensation in the state. Stepping up its campaign against Omar Abdullah’s statements against Afzal Guru’s hanging, BJP today used Mahila Morcha for a massive demonstration and protest in the heart of Jammu city.
Led by Morcha State President Sakina Bano, hundreds of BJP Mahila Morcha activists held a protest demonstration at Kachi Chawni Chowk against the utterances of State Chief Minister Omar Abdullah advocating mercy to Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru. The Morcha activists were carrying placards with slogans advising Omar Abdullah to stop making such statements.
Sakina Bano said that it is indeed unfortunate that the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Omar Abdullah is playing the communal card for appeasing a particular faith. Sakina Bano reminded Omar Abdullah that Afzal Guru was master-mind in hatching conspiracy to attack Parliament. Anyone who indulges in such an act cannot be pardoned because of his being born in a particular faith to which Omar too belongs, said Sakina.
She said that Afzal Guru attacked sovereignty of India. She also alleged that the chief minister has proved a failure on all fronts and by making such statements, he is trying to deviate the attention of people from his own lapses. She also took to task the Congress ministers in the government and asked them to shed their “Kursi Prem” and come out openly against anti-national stand of NC leadership.
