Good health is directly proportional to right to life! | JK Govt's `health campaign' | | Early Times Report Jammu, Sept 3: For the first time in the history of the state, the health of the commoner seems to worry the government. An advertisement has been issued for local dailies that give the dos and don'ts to maintain good health. The advertisement has been issued in connection with National Nutrition Week (September 1-7) celebrations. The advertisement has suggested a variety of measures ranging from avoiding junk food to doing yoga regularly. "Malnutrition reduces body resistance to fight infections, reduces intellectual & physical development. Good Nutrition forms the basis for good health", the advertisement reads. In addition to this, the advertisement has suggested keeping the environment pollution free by planting greenery. But the most important point that catches the attention of the commoner is the last tip. "Help to de-stress yourself- smile more, anger less." (SIC). A finding by a renowned doctor, however, mocks at the advertisement. According to the findings, around sixty thousand women visit Srinagar's only psychiatric disease hospital every year. All of them have stress related problems. How can they de-stress?" One of the victims who talked to Early Times in May last year was prevented three times from opening the grave of her only son who was killed by government sponsored gunmen. All other sufferers have woeful stories to tell. Majority of them developed complications after the death of a family member either at the hands of militants or men in uniform. And last year's bloody agitation that left around 120 youths dead has taxed the nerves of many a person. How can they achieve good health? For the information of one and all, good health is directly proportional to peace and tranquility. In a place where right to life does not exist, suggesting tips for good health makes no sense. Surprisingly most of the persons who got killed last year were students and, therefore, highly health conscious. The government could not get better poster boys to run the `good health' campaign than them. But they were killed and their good health did not, rather could not save them. Unless right to life is guaranteed, good health shall remain a distant dream. Is anybody listening? |
