Fire follows exchange of sweets | | | If during the Eid celebrations the Pakistani and the Indian soldiers, deployed on the LOC and the International Border in Jammu and Kashmir, exchanged sweets, the same set of soldiers exchanged fire a few hours after the earlier clebrations. While the two sides exchanged sweets in connection with the Eid clebrations in Poonch on Wednesday another set of soldiers exchanged fire in the Keran sector in north Kashmir on Wednesday and Thursday. The atmosphere of bonhomie that had been generated by the Poonch incident turned bitter with the exchange of fire in Keran sector in which one Indian and three Pakistani soldiers were killed and two others were wounded.Incidents similar to the one witnessd on Wednesday and Thursday were witnessed on India's Independence Day on August 15.The two armies exchanged sweets in Poonch sector in the morning and in the evening the soldiers exchanged fire on the International Border in Samba sector. These incidents have not been quite rare.In fact during the last six months Pakistani troops have violated the border ceasefire on many an occasions and the purpose for all these violations was to provide assistance to militants in crossing into Jammu and Kashmir. As far as the incidents of exchange of fire between the two sides in Keran sector is concerned the Pakistani Defence authorities have blamed the Indian troops for having fired the first shot. This charge has been vehemently denied by the Army authorities in Srinagar.Well even if the first shot was fired by the Indian troops they were duty bound to do so because they have been instructed to deal firmly with the infiltrators and those trying to assist infiltration. The experience that one has got during the last 20 years one is convinced that the Pakistani troops open fire whenever they plan to carve out a passage for the infiltrators for crossing into Jammu and Kashmir. It seems that Islamabad's support for the process of dialogue with New Delhi is meant for international consumption after Washington,London and other nations have mounted pressure on Pakistan to resolve bilateral problems with India through talks. If Pakistani troops continue to indulge in frequent ceasefire violations and in assisting infiltrators, who have been brought on the launching pads across the LOC and the IB,New Delhi may again be forced to suspend the process of dialogue.Islamabad should know it that New Delhi suspended the composite dialogue soon after the Mumbai mayhem of 2008 which had been carried out by terrorists from Pakistan.Hence India has exhausted reserves of its patience. Now the ball is in the court iof Islamabad. If Pakistan wants talks to continue it should ensure zero level infiltration on the LOC and the IB.
