WEAKENING TIES BETWEEN TEACHER AND STUDENTS
KHUSHWANT S RANIAL9/4/2011 8:47:51 PM
The teacher’s Day is celebrated every on the 5th of September in the memory of our most revered late Dr.Sh.Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan(1888-1975) ,who remained our second President as well. A men of great vision, scholarly in academic field ,a great Philosopher, thinker, writer ,revolutionary in the field of studies and above all possessed unmatchable qualities of head and heart left this world with indelible imprints on the sands of time to recall every year his unparallel contributions in the field of studies especially . Once when he took up a teaching job at Oxford ,England ,somebody remarked that he could emulate America’s Woodrow Wilson’s rise from professorship to president ship and the prophecy came true, when Dr.Radhakrishanan became the second President of the great Indian Republic on May 13,1962 .It was his esteemed wide knowledge that the credit of 18 publications goes to his name including the popular ones namely The Hindu View of Life and Indian Philosophy ,for which he was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1954 .Every year on this day, our teachers pledge to sacrifice their lives by imparting knowledge to their students but unfortunately the contemplated theory does barely get reflected in their deeds ,leaving to widen the gaps between the teacher and the student . A lively bondage ,a hearty relation , a one to one friendly/fatherly affection is seen wanting now –a- day .Parallel setting of the mindset is not taking place between the duo as a result of which there is total lack of coordination and communication . Neither the teacher is really interested to lend ingrained knowledge from the core of his heart and nor the students find any motivation to extract from the innate talent of the teacher. Resultantly there is chaos and grown indiscipline in the classroom .The student does not know how much respect the teacher deserves to be paid and nor the teacher is found interested to lend the moral values to his wards to mend his career. In fact, the teachers of our modern era are mostly engaged in passing time by indulging in the gossips etc. in the classroom rather than taking their profession in professional way. Hardly the teacher of the today takes in pride to be a teacher. Furthermore the total commercialisation and privatisation of the educational set up has led to the genesis of the tuition culture .The weak students most rely on the tuition than paying rapt attention in the class and the teachers knows very well that students will definitely follow them to the tuition centres to seek knowledge to get through the class so they too remain non serious in their respective classes. The net sufferer is the intelligent/mediocre student who fail to gain due attention of the teacher for no fault of theirs. The teacher of today is more engaged in their side businesses apart from the tuitions to earn more to meet the inflationary trend, changing life style and above all to remain abreast with the needs of the changing times . No doubt, the teacher has the right to live honourably but at the cost of the students career is neither advisable and nor acceptable to any segment of the society .Child is the father of the nation . If the basis of the a student’s career is made strong today, then there is no second opinion that future of the entire nation would be safer and stronger tomorrow .This s only possible when teacher does realise about his role towards his society and state and earnestly strive for the seeking excellence in his work culture. The teacher should don the role of a guide and mentor. Owing to his intelligence and creative outlook, future citizens worth competence are created. They must make it surer that the basic values that bind the group and society together are placed intact like absence of partisan attitude, social discrimaination.equal treatment, freedom and order etc. Teacher should possess the art of balancing the tools employed to educate the heterogeneous class mates. They should not forget that too much freedom would lead to indiscipline, too much order would lead to regimentation, too much unequal treatment would lead to life time resentment for authority .To add a measure of each ingredient and serve it to the tender minds is akin to performing the balancing act all the time while making sure that the individual self respect enhances as well. In gist ,the onus lies on the teachers to create social awareness ,develop analytical minds of the students ,groom the professional ,direct the performer and prepare the scholar. Respect is something which is not bought in the market by the exchange of money. It has to gained and earned through one’s sweat .Teacher should toil in their respective jobs holding humanistic touch. Mere remembrance and holding the teacher’s day is not going to raise their stature in the eyes of the students. Due to scientific advancements, the students of the present era are far advanced in their thoughts , speed ,action and reaction. They cannot be befooled more .They hold the sense of recognition of the efforts of the teachers in the classroom and outside it in building their character and shaping their destinies .So teacher must render yeoman’s service to the mankind for his own prestige and betterment of the wards he is entrusted to take care of. Only this could be a rich tribute to the Our great scholar who too was keen in contributing something out of his possessed corpus of knowledge to his bench strength of the students during his life span.
