AC rooms, no sunlight increase Blood Sugar: Dr Jitender Singh | | | EARLY TIMES Jammu. Sep 5:While the modern lifestyle changes including fast food, lack of exercise and stress have already contributed tremendously to the rapid spread of Diabetes Mellitus in India with even Jammu & Kashmir recording over 15 percent Diabetes prevalance, the latest scientific evidence suggests that staying indoors, remaining confined to air-conditioned chambers and thus avoiding natural sunlight can also aggravate the risk of future Diabetes or deteriorate the level of existing diabetes. This was stated here today by Dr Jitendra Singh, nationally known Professor of Diabetes and author, while addressing a Diabetes CME update programme for physicians, Diabetologists and MD scholars. The scientific session was chaired by Dr Bharat Bhushan Gupta HOD Medicine GMC. Dr Jitendra Singh, who was the distinguished Guest faculty speaker on the occasion, elaborated with the help of powerpoint that Vitamin D, traditionally known as sunshine vitamin, is primarily provided by the sunlight and is not only essential for the strength and well-being of bones but has now been understood to play a vital role in the metabolism of glucose and maintenance of blood Sugar levels in the body. Dr Jitendra Singh further explained that while in persons with type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, sufficient amounts of Vitamin D help in improving Insulin sensitivity, in type 1 Diabetes it helps by acting as an immunomodulator. .More significantly, he added, even in pregnancy, deficiency of vitamin D can lead to increased risk of Gestational Diabetes as well as adverse pregnancy outcomes. Deficiency of Vitamin D also increases risk of diabetic complications on heart, kidneys, etc, he added. According to Dr Jitendra Singh, the common causes of Vitamin D deficiency in modern times include less of sun exposure, changing lifestyle and diet,, use of sun-screens, staying mostly indoors, formal dress codes, certain medicines and drugs etc and therefore he recommended use of Vitamin D supplement tablets and sachets wherever required. The lecture was followed by a lively question-answer session. On the occasion Krishan Lal Gupta ,oldest practicing physician of town at the age of 82 was also felicitated.
