24th Convocation of IGNOU held | 792 candidates from Regional Centre Jammu declared eligible to receive Degrees/Diplomas] | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Sept 5 Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) organized its 24th Convocation which was held on 5th September 2011 at IGNOU Maidan Garhi New Delhi Headquarters and simultaneously at its 44 Regional Centres across the Country including Regional Centre Jammu via tele-conferencing. Dr. (Mrs.) D. Purandeswari, Minister of State for Human Resource Development, was the Chief Guest and delivered the Convocation Address and Shri E. Ahamed, Hon’ble Minister of State for Human Resource Development and External Affairs, delivered the Special Convocation Address and Felicitation Address at IGNOU Headquarters at Maidan Garhi, New Delhi. On this occasion D.Litt. (Honoris Causa) was conferred upon His Holiness The Dalai Lama. Over 38010 students all over the country were provided Degrees, Diplomas and Certificates during the Convocation functions held all over the country. Convocation at Jammu was held at Auditorium, Govt. College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu. Prof. R N K Bamezai, Vice Chancellor, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, Katra was the Guest of Honour on this occasion at Regional Centre Jammu and awarded Degrees and Diplomas to the eligible Learners. A total of 792 learners from Regional Centre Jammu were declared successful and eligible to receive Diplomas and Degree Certificates out of which about 234 learners were awarded Degrees and Diplomas in the Convocation function at Jammu in person. Prof. Bamezai termed the 24th Convocation of IGNOU as an occasion of Celebration of IGNOU’s achievements to be referred to as the People’s University accessible to all those far and wide who otherwise would have lost the opportunity to acquire higher education, improve upon their qualification and increase the chances of employment. Prof. Bamezai expressed that IGNOU has allowed to empower marginalized sections of the society, drop outs of conventional educational system and those who cannot afford to educate themselves because of distances and economic reasons. Regional Director, K K Bhat, presented the Regional Centre Report on the occasion of the 24th Convocation of IGNOU and 15th Convocation of the Regional Centre Jammu since its establishment in the year 1998. In his report, Sh. Bhat presented a description of the initiatives that Indira Gandhi National Open University and the Regional Centre Jammu have taken to strengthen the Student support services network as a whole. Sh. Bhat revealed that the Regional Centre Jammu is marking its presence in the remotest parts of the Region by expanding its network of Learner Centres, Knowledge Centres under the domain of various Schemes like CNRI, Remote Area and EEBB (Sachar Committee Report), etc. He stated that the Regional Centre Jammu has already marked its presence by establishing Learner Centres in the remote areas like Chhatroo, Mahore, Nagri, Muralian, Marh and the proposals for establishing the Learner Centres in areas like Bani, Paddar, Kalakote are in the pipeline.
