Dogri poet Yash Sharma passes away | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu , Sept 5 Eminent Dogri poet and writer, Yash Sharma passed away at his residence here at Gandhi Nagar this morning. He was 82. Sahitya Akademi Awardee who was popularly known as “Dogri Geeton Ka Raaj Kumar” was unwell for the past several years. However, despite his illness and frail health he remained a prolific writer all through his life and remained most loved and respected figure in the literary circles of the state. Recently, he compiled a new poetry book, Boond Trailu Di (Dew Drop). The book by the octogenarian poet came within a span of less than four months after an anthology of his Dogri poetry, Hun Main Utthein Nahin Rohanda (Now I No Longer Live There) compiled under Writer in Residency scholarship awarded by Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi, was released in Jammu University. A recipient of many literary awards, Yash started writing poetry during his college days under the tutelage of famous Hindi poet, Harivansh Rai Bachchan. Sharma retired from Radio Kashmir and wrote three volumes of poetry including, Jo Tere Man Chitt Laggi Ja, the book fetched him the Sahitya Akademi Award, Bedi Pattan Sanjh Mallah, Hun Main Utthein Nahin Rohanda and Boond Trailu Di. Besides, there is also an English translation of his poetry, Tale of a Virgin River. He also wrote popular songs of the first Dogri film Yash had been a great draw in poetic congregations. He was admired for his unique style of poetry rendition. “Yash’s songs are jewels in the crown of his muse. Whether one hears these songs or only reads them, the effect is that of a gentle caress affectionately and intimately planted, without diffidence or affection, but with ebullient warmth and exuberant gay abandon,” a citation from Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages reads. Critics believe that his poetry uses metaphor related to nature, but it always carries a subtle philosophy related to human life. “Yash Sharma is a wordsmith par excellence. He paints with words. His poems, painted in various hues of human emotions, effectively evoke poignant pathos, especially of Dogra womenfolk living in hills,” says eminent Dogri writer, Colonel Shivnath. He is survived by his wife, noted Hindi writer, Raksha Sharma, three daughters including noted peace singer of the subcontinent, Seema Anil Sehgal, Shayamla, Shailja Sharma and a son Dr. Aseem Sharma. Different literary and cultural organizations including writers and poets have expressed shock and grief over the death of Yash. According to them the poet will continue to live on through his immortal songs which have already attained the status of folk songs in public psyche.
