21st meeting of Council of SKUAST-Kashmir
Guv, CM call for optimum utilization of infrastructure, resources

SRINAGAR Sept 5: Governor N. N. Vohra and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today emphasized need for restructuring courses and urgently working out modalities for filling up all available seats at the under-graduate, postgraduate and Ph.D. levels in both the agricultural universities of the state.

Governor stressed that this was imperative for ensuring optimum utilization of available Faculty and infrastructure for generating trained human resource for the progressive growth of agriculture and allied sectors. Governor and the Chief Minister were addressing the 21st University Council meeting of the Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST), Kashmir, at Raj Bhavan, here today.

Governor, who is the Chancellor of the University, chairing the meeting, stressed that the Committee chaired by Chief Secretary, constituted for reviewing the existing admission process must lose no further time in finding a viable solution to reverse the declining trend of admissions in the two Farm Universities.

Mian Altaf Ahmad, Minister for Forests, stressed the need for development of pastures and grazing lands to meet the growing needs of the livestock rearers. Sham Lal Sharma, Minister for Horticulture and Floriculture, put forth several suggestions for growth of these sectors, pointing out that they have a vast potential in the state.

Dr. Tej Partap, Vice Chancellor, SKUAST, Kashmir, made a comprehensive power point presentation, dwelling on the achievements of the University and the major initiatives under consideration. He also dwelt on the various components of the Rs. 100 crore special grant announced by the Prime Minister for the University. He gave the to-date status in regard to the setting up of new Krishi Vigyan Kendras in the Kashmir and Ladakh regions.

The meeting took stock of various research projects and other initiatives taken after the last meeting of the SKUAST, besides discussing other agenda items which included a review of the follow-up action in respect of various decisions taken in the last meeting. Meeting was attended by Dr. B. Mishra, Vice Chancellor, SKUAST, Jammu, Dr. A.R.Trag, Vice Chancellor, Islamic University of Science and Technology, Awantipore, R. K. Goyal, Principal Secretary to Governor Ravi Magotra, Director General Budget and Prof. Farook Zaki, Registrar, SKUAST, Kashmir.
