Farooq remained mum when Maqbool was hanged vWhy shed tears for Guru? | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Sept 5: When former chief Minister and National Conference patron, Dr Farooq Abdullah supported Omar on his Afzal Guru comments, he only exposed his double standards. Dr Farooq had remained mum at a crucial juncture state's history. His silence changed the course of state's history. Omar in one of his tweets sought clemency for Afzal Guru. He has been convicted in Parliament attack case. The Supreme Court has rejected his appeal and the mercy petition is pending before the President of India. The Union Cabinet has recommended death penalty for Guru. Omar believes hanging Afzal at this crucial time will prove detrimental to `peace' in Kashmir. His comments evoked severe criticism across India. The BJP even torched his effigies. Amid all this political drama, Dr Farooq stepped forward and supported his son. "Omar is right ", he said. Dr Farooq encountered a similar problem during his first tenure as Chief Minister in 1984. He remained silent when New Delhi decided to hand his friend and Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) ideologue, Maqbool Bhat. Kashmir watchers blame Dr Farooq of inaction. "Had he offered resistance, the situation would have been different today", they opine. Bhat was hanged on February 11, 1984 and his hanging did make a difference. A new era commenced and the state paid the price. Some quarters say both New Delhi and the state government misread the situation. But this is not supported by the moves that followed the hanging. A year later, the infamous Terrorist and Disruptive Activities Prevention Act (TADA) 1985 was extended to the state of Jammu Kashmir. This proves that New Delhi (if not the state government) was fully aware of the `explosive' situation in Jammu Kashmir. A special law, therefore, was extended to set things right. This was followed by an attack on a place of worship in South Kashmir district of Anantnag. Dr Farooq is making a lot of noise today to save Afzal Guru. He understands that the hanging may adversely affect the situation. This means Farooq has a better understanding of the situation now. Has he double standards? Or, is he simply playing papa? |
