The Department of Wildlife Protection has embarked on a plan to restore and protect the Wetland Reserves of Jammu like Gharana, Kukrian,Pargawal etc.The Wildlife Warden Jammu in this context approached the local administration including Deputy Commissioner Jammu and SDM RS Pura to get their assistance for conservation of the wetlands and resolving the pending issues of demarcation, sewage water diversion and habitat improvement etc. The Deputy Commissioner Jammu has recently issued instruction to the BDO R.S.Pura to construct the drainage channel for diversion of sewage water entering Gharana wetland from the households so that biodiversity of the wetland is not harmed. The Department of Wildlife has drawn a comprehensive management plan for conservation of Gharana Wetland Conservation Reserve which is being submitted to the Government. Gharana wetland, also declared as IBA-Important Bird Area, attracts thousands of migratory water fowl during winter and is the heaven for bird watchers, naturalists, school children and tourists. It is the only wetland close to Jammu town which offers a spectacularly rich avian diversity during winter and has immense potential for eco-tourism. The management interventions like removal of silt and unwanted weeds are also being being taken up on priority so that visiting migratory birds find congenial habitat and atmosphere during coming winter.
