PDP demands real amnesty to political detainees | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, September 6: The main opposition PDP is in favour of “real” amnesty to all political detainees. It does not believe in simple announcements on grant of amnesty to stone throwers and political detainees.
In this context the PDP has decided to move a resolution in the ensuing session of the state legislature. Asked what the party meant by “real” amnesty a senior PDP leader, Nizam-u-Din Bhat, said that during the last several years it has been seen that even after announcing amnesty to political prisoners the Government would not release them.
Bhat said that in certain cases even the court order on release of detainees was not being honoured by the Government. In other cases the released persons were immediately rearrested.
The PDP leader said that his resolution on real amnesty would provide for some punishment for those Government officials who did not follow the amnesty order in letter and spirit.
He said that there were a number of political activists who were in detention on frivolous charges and even after having spent a number of years and months in the prisons they were not being released. Hence such a situation calls for real amnesty.
Bhat said that once the detainees were released it would deprive separatists of an issue on which they start protest rallies and shutdown.
He said if Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, claims that the situation in the state has improved then there was no need for it to keep the political activists in prison.
