Hon'ble speaker must ensure answers from State Government
9/7/2011 1:22:37 AM
It is our foremost duty to set the record straight
for our esteemed readers to whom we owe the success of Early Times in such a short period of time. Our readers have stood by us while all vested interests and those who feel grossly insecure due to our brave, outspoken and straightforward criticism of the corrupt, inefficient, anti-national and anti-social elements, ganged up to harm the interests of Early Times.
During the last session of the State Legislative Assembly, an hon'ble member of assembly, Shri Chaman Lal Gupta of the BJP asked a very pertinent question regarding the state government's attitude towards Early Times. The hon'ble member had asked a question seeking the government's response to the fact as to why government advertisements had been stopped to Early Times. The member's query was specific and precise. He wanted to know the exact reasons as to why a newspaper which had been making its impact on the society and also discharging the duties of a responsible watchdog of democracy in the State, had been chosen to block government advertisements. That question is still unanswered and since the State Legislature is again meeting in summer capital Srinagar by the end of September, we appeal the hon'ble speaker of the State Legislative Assembly to issue directions to the State government to answer the question of the hon'ble MLA regarding the query raised by him about Early Times.
Linked to the government's decision to stop advertisements to Early Times is the allied intimidation and repressive action of the authorities against the owners of this newspaper. This includes highhanded and unlawful police actions against the lawful and licensed business interests of the owners. A glaring example being the blatant and uncalled for intervention of the police to stop and hammer the routine functioning of two bars belonging to the owners in Jammu city.
The intimidating intervention by the police at these two bars did not even spare the employees working at these places who were threatened to give up their jobs and not serve the legitimate business interests of the owners.
The hon'ble speaker of the State Legislative Assembly, Shri Mohammad Akbar Lone has proved through his conduct of the Assembly's proceedings that he means business. Not only has the hon'ble speaker maintained the high traditions of legislative democracy through discharge of his duties as a fearless guardian of the Legislature in the State, but he has also made his presence felt by ensuring that the high dignity of the august office he holds is maintained and remains above board.
We appeal the hon'ble speaker of the State Legislative Assembly to ensure that the government discharges its rightful legislative obligation by answering the hon'ble MLA's question during the forthcoming session of the State Legislative Assembly. The hon'ble speaker should also look into the repressive and threatening posturing by the government against the owners of the newspaper.
It is hoped and prayed the hon'ble speaker does not accept any excuses by the government in yet again delaying the reply to the said question.
