Early Times Report
Jammu, Sept 6 : Chances for unity among the hardliners and the moderates in the camp of separatists have become remote following two recent sensational US cable leaks released by Wikileaks. As per one release US embassy officials in New Delhi have claimed that Chairman All Party Hurriyat Conference (APHC), Molvi Umar Farooq, had opposed issuance of passport to Syed Ali Shah Geelani who had planned to attend a conference in the United States.
Wikileaks has claimed that Maulana Farooq opposed issuance of passport to Geelani on the plea that the latter may create a scene there which could make New Delhi's position embarrassing.
When the print media published the excerpts of this leak Molvi Umar neither rejected the US Embassy claim nor denied the veracity of the report. He did not say much which could debunk the US assertion.
He simply said that when the separatists were to visit Pakistan occupied Kashmir by a bus travelling on Srinagar-Muzaffarabad road he wanted the Government to include Geelani Sahib in the bus.The Maulana simply wanted his critics to believe that how could a leader who wanted Geelani to be included in the Bus enroute Muzaffarabad oppose granting him (Geelani) passport ? A lame defence. Another US cable leak released by Wikileaks has claimed that moderate separatists were not totally opposed to the execution of Afzal Guru who has been awarded death sentence by the Supreme Court on charge of having masterminded the terrorist attack on the Parliament building in 2001.
The US embassy cable leak has claimed that though the moderates believe that Guru could not get adequate representation during parts of his trial he should be executed if found involved in terrorist attack on the Parliament building. The leak also claimed that these moderate separatists outwardly and that too for public consumption support those who favour his death sentence to be commuted internally they want him to be hanged to death for his terrorist activities.
These two leaks are likely to widen the gulf bet ween the hardliners and the moderates.During the last seven years several attempts were made to bring about reconciliation between the two Hurriyat factions but all these efforts bore no fruit because Geelani continues to be suspicious about the moderate separatists.
In the past the efforts to unite the two factions were made first by Shabir Ahmed Shah and when he failed in his mission Molvi Umar picked up the threads left behind by Shah.He too did not succeed.Even Mohd.Yasin Malik too had attempted at bringing the two groups together but no success.
When Gen.Pervez Musharraf ruled Pakistan he too had favoured reconciliation between the two factions of the Hurriyat Conference. But his wish could not be fulfilled. His idea on bring the two factions together was pursued by other Pakistani leaders but without any success.
Reports said that the last year's civilian strife in Srinagar, in which the leaders of the two factions played complimentary roles towards each other, had set the stage for a compromise but the Wikileak reports have burnt the already frail bridges that linked the two sides. Reports suggest that the hardliners may adopt tough postures against the moderates.
